I'm trying to find out more about it because my nephew want to join the Army National Guard.
Is the pamphlets accurate about what they will be doing?
What is the difference, or is there a difference, between the Community National Guard?
What should he know before he signs?
Will having asthma disqualify him?

Thank you so much for answering, 1irving.

Is there a such thing as community national guard?

He is currently studying forensics and law enforcement in college.
I tried to tell my sister some of the things I have learnt from you all here but I am trying to reinforce it.

He does have cold induced asthma but is otherwise healthy. He works out but still is a bit thin to me.

Zoie I wasn't in the Guard but during Vietnam it was a place where guys went to avoid going to Vietnam, so was the Army Reserve. I recommend this young man go to a National Guard recruiter and level with him about his asthma. At one time the Guard was granting some medical waivers but because the Guard has changed and become highly integrated with the active duty main force and been required to deploy into situations it never did in our day the requirements have changed.
If I had to guess (I was a RA medic) I would say his changes are maybe 40-60 at best depending on the severity of his condition. I do know that many Guard units in different states have civilian employees filling contract slots because everyone in the Guard isn't a full time duty for many Guard members. Its still a "citizen soldier concept" even though its been activated over and over in the last 10-12 years to fill gaps in our main forces. Lots of folks get jobs without ever actually enlisting. Have him look into it.

Thank you Richard, I will tell him.

To be honest, my sister, his mom, just about had a heart attack when he told her he wanted to join. She is so worried about his safety. She would support him 100% if he enlisted. I am assuming this is pretty much every mom's first response. I just wish he wouldn't go overseas to fight when so much is needed right here. I wonder if the places overseas truly appreciate what our military do and sacrifice for them.
