I used to go to salon and spend a lot of money. Then they switched brands and it started really wrecking my hair. So after a long recovery of not dying hair I bought Garnier Nutrisse for $7. I switched to slightly more expensive $9 product of theirs because the grey coverage was supposed to be better(pretty much the same). I was using a medium or light brown and bought a dark mahogany hoping for some drama. There was no drama but it was a nice color and everyone liked it.

What I am wondering is if I go lighter if the greys are not as noticeable when they pop out like they do? My hair is a medium brown so I am not sure if getting a dark blonde will just give me slightly lighter hair and no drama. I was born blonde and hair got darker as I aged. I don't want to get bleached and go light blonde though.

Just looking to see what everyone has experience with.

Every time I ask people I know I get different opinions about going darker or lighter. The salon hair colors were in the red family. So you know how that goes they start fading. The Nutrisse stuff works great and I have even started using their shampoo and conditioner. 1/3 the cost of the salon stuff I was buying and work better.

Share you stories good and bad.

as a fellow natural blonde, i have struggled getting my hair told hold red dyes. it fades very quickly, and then leaves my hair discolored. i would think the lighter color would blend better with gray. i'm one of the weirdos, i think natural gray hair can be sexy, be confident with it and own it, it doesn't seem to matter whether you get salon dye jobs or at-home dye jobs, they seem to have been much more disastrous on my hair than when i just let it BE.

ETA:

as far as shampoo/conditioner, i've been SUPER happy with a product line i get from SALLY BEAUTY SUPPLY. The brand is "ION" and it's the blue label "extreme moisture" line of products. There are other ION lines for different types, but i have been using this for three years. In the past I struggled with long hair and split ends and having it cooperate with styling. Now, my hair is moist and managable, split ends are all but null.

link to the deep conditioner, i use it as a daily conditioner though, and it's great

I love red hair to death. every time i dyed my hair to red, it fade away.

I think grey hair should only get blonde highlight, not dye. Nobody likes grey root.

My hair started going grey before I was 20. I don't mind the grey but I do dye it when I get the notion. It all depends on my mood at the time. I don't look "old" but when I color my hair people tell me I look much younger, I have actually been carded for beer!!! Although I think the gal needed her eyes checked. Nice thing about the grey? It doesn't hold color as well and I don't ever have to pay for highlights

Mine has been every color there is and I've found that gray blends better with the lighter shades.

Gray clashes with red tones and then fades very fast. But I've had better luck using natural Henna enhanced shampoos and conditioners that I've found in some health food stores.

My only problem with having been blonde is that it can look yellowish after awhile. I recommend using filtered water for shampooing.

Also- you can make a tea dye to enhance the color between treatments. Black teas for darker hair, roobios for reds, chamomile for blondes.

I have dyed my own hair at home when I want to go darker. My hair is a dark blonde/light brown shade naturally but at times I want it dark brown or even close to black. I use the boxed from the store too. It's intended to mostly cover gray and washes out within 8 weeks. BUT the only drawback is if you ever want to go blonde or get any type of lighter highlights you have to wait literally months to do it!

Example: I put black in my hair in January of this year and it washed out within 8 weeks but in June when I went to get highlights, yes June! the stylist said no way she could do it because of the color still in my hair from January and that it would have turned my hair an orange-red so I passed on it of course at the time.

You can also use a toner at home on blonde hair that turns yellowy. Mine will do that from chlorine in pools. Easy to buy from your local beauty supply store, and just douse your hair with it - all of it, let it sit the recommended time then shampoo it out

I let my hair go completely gray last year.

This September, I decided it did not look good on me.

Instead, it made me long 10 years older than I am and showed my wrinkles more in my face.

So I colored it a burgundy and it turned in purplish for a while.

Finally, I was able to get it a chestnut brown. It looks good.

Drawback though, it is a color that requires a lot of maintenance because the gray will pop out very quickly. That is why I touch it up once a week.

If you are not committed to maintaining your color so your roots don't show, you are better off not coloring it at all. To me you look worse with roots showing.

Some ladies with dark hair will switch to a golden blonde hair dye it helps blend the greys without turning them into a blonde. After several months of using it however, it will make their hair a golden honey brown but it still blends the grey.

How hair colour works depends on your own natural hair colour. Like the colour chart you have to use certain colours to contradict your own tones. For example brunettes going light to prevent brass need to use ash tones to balance out the red or it ends up looking green.

Here ladies, hopefully this will help you when selecting your colours for your hair.
