I took over the care of my sisters dog a few weeks ago. He's an 8 1/2 year old, 10 lb, long haired chihuahua and he has very irritated, sensitive skin. He is constantly biting all over himself. One vet said he would probably need cortisone shots for the rest of his life to ease the problem. Another vet said he has a bad flea allergy (He doesn't have fleas) and to apply Advantage flea medicine for medium size dogs on him every 3 weeks. Well, the Advantage does not seem to be working because he's still biting himself!!! I bathe him with an oatmeal shampoo but that only helps for a day or so. I don't know what to do for him!! He has scabs all over and my heart breaks for him.
Has anyone dealt with this problem???

First of all, no disrespect intended, but vets will not always be straight with you. They will keep you coming back, with "let's try this" . They will not tell you that the main cause of skin allergies (and other allergies as well, is from their food (in fact, they will sell you one of the worst rated and grainiest foods as a treatment for your dog- Hill's Science Diet). Certain grains and dyes used in dog food causes allergies, skin, eyes, sneezing etc.
My Mom's Yorkie-Poo was a lot like what you described, she was scratching, itching, losing hair, her skin/fur was greasy and no other words for it, she stunk.
Mom spent a lot of money at the vet (she came away from the vet crying and worrying when they gave her the total)- the vet did skin scrapings, etc. said it was an allergy, gave her cortisone shots, pills, etc. Nothing helped.
Mom called me one day, and asked if I though she should have her dog put to sleep, and I said no. I told Mom it was the food. I got her food changed over, and she is clean healthy, thick fur, no problems- and is now a fairly active 15 year old. The little dog came to live with me when Mom passed away 4 years ago. Her picture is on my profile.
Check your food ingredients and quality on dogfoodadvisor, and don't feed less than a 4 star rated food. There are many affordable foods on both the 4 star and 5 star list.

Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach is a great food, helped my pits a whole lot and its not too costly

I would never recommend Purina products. (Purina foods are what caused the Yorkie-Poos allergy problems)- but to be fair to animechic, I did look up Purina Pro Plan Sensitive skin and stomach- it did rate 3 stars, but it has some highly controversial items in it:
Animal digest (which is a spray on substance used to coax the dog to eat the food),
garlic oil- which if from fresh garlic, can actually kill your dog (causes Heinz body anemia), and
Menadione- which can also kill your dog. It can cause liver toxicity in dogs- and it's very dangerous to mess with the liver.
Why would you want to take that chance with your dog? I wouldn't.

Thank you ladies for your advice!
I went to Pet Club this afternoon and they had so many varieties of dog food I was overwhelmed. One of the employees helped me and she was very knowledgeable! She has the same dog as I do and with the same issue. She said it is very rare for a dog to have an actual skin allergy, usually all skin sensitivities can be traced back to their food. Especially food with a lot of fillers. She suggested a grain free dog food and I settled on Taste of the Wild Lamb . I looked it up,as suggested, and it rates 4 1/2 stars!!! I gave a little to Cupid when I got home and he loves it! Now I just need to wait and see if there's a change in his skin.

I like that because any dog food or treats come under recall, they notify you as soon as it happens, usually even before it hits the news. Handy, and helps keep your fur babies safe.

try rubbing him down with vegetable oil...it will moisturize his skin,it is non toxic,it can potentially repel any mites that might be on his skin,and it will not stain things if he gets it on something.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, I just realized there had been activity on this thread. Your suggestion sounds great!. We changed his food which helped alot but he was put on an anti-inflammatory medicine for arthritis ,last month, and it has aggravated his skin condition again. I'm definitely going to try the vegetable oil though. Thanks for the suggestion.

My youngest dog was itchy when I brought him home 5 months ago. I give him a teaspoon of coconut oil every day and he does not scratch any more.
My 11 year old has arthritis. I give her 1000 mg. of gluclosome, a tsp of coconut oil, a pinch of turmeric, and grain free food.

If you feed quality food (not supermarket brands like Purina, or Pedigree) you don't need the fish oil supplements, as it is provided in the food.
Many health problems, both in people and pets are caused or added to by diet.

Also, if you notice on down, she has a prayer thread for her dog, It started having seizures, but at her last post, she had put off the vet appointment.
I'm concerned for the dog, and gave advice that would (should) help with seizure "triggers", but it really should be seen by the veterinarian to find the cause.

Thinking the itching and biting oneself in the chihuahua breed is an occurance that happens with older ones. My son got one for Christmas when he was 7. The chihuahua was only 6 weeks old when we got him. No problem with the dog until he started aging and he did the same thing. I found that if I rubbed the rash with preperation H and pulled a sock over his body, it took care of the itching. Smelled like the devil but it helped. Now there is a product called Ivy Itch which relieves painful itching. You may want to try that.
