With any laptop, they put a lot in a small package and air flow becomes more critical because the design doesn't allow multiple large vents but instead there are just a few. Generally they put vents in the back and bottom. The one on the bottom sucks because it is easily blocked and is also one of the most important ones. If you put your laptop on your bed, you may be blocking this air passage. Locate the passages, check out the user's manual. Also, check out the reviews on amazon.com, newegg.com, etc... There will be a lot of cr@p but some really helpful info.

When the unit gets hot, the system starts slowing down. This is temporary until temperatures are back. Although it is not necessary, those notebook cooling pads can be helpful. Do a google search or amazon search on this "R9-NBC-XSLI-GP". That one has legs so you can have it on your bed.

If you are getting crazy in your bed, make sure your laptop is somewhere secure. That cooling pad doesn't help with that.

Your system will most likely come with some preinstalled software that just slows things down and is there more for marketing purposes than functionality. You may get a 90 day trial of McAfee or Norton Antivirus. In my opinion, those are not worth it. So often those are the programs that the system hangs on.

I recommend running this program to get rid of all the crapware that is preinstalled:
http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/download

You download that and run it. It just gives you a list of everything installed or about to be setup. The ones that are checked are the ones that are considered bloatware, noncritical to operations, not beneficial and recommended to be removed. It is up to you if you want to. Check out the list and you can decide from there. It is free and liberating.

Depending on what you are going to do with the computer, the Window's built in malware/antivirus system may be sufficient or not. If you are going to be pirating, checking out porn, gambling or anything considered slightly subversive, you will want to consider getting a good antivirus/spyware protection. I like ESET. On my personal computer I DO NOT use it and instead use the Windows free built in security suite and I'm straight.

If you haven't purchased a laptop yet, check out sites like: fatwallet.com, slickdeals.net... Read the forums and their discussions about a particular unit that is recommended. You will definitely get more bang for your buck and there are a lot of people who are a lot more cutting edge and knowledgeable than I on there. Some of them buy the best systems possible using those sites & resell them. Their clients know what they do and they do not mind paying them for it because in the end, they are happy with the decision made for them.

Congrats on your newest member of your family. If you have pets, they may get jealous. Show them youtube videos that they may enjoy and don't neglect them.

What is the brand of your laptop . Depending on your laptop, you may either need a hard reboot or a strong virus removal due to the strength of the current operating system as well as the resolve of the whole laptop in general.....gamer
