How do you get over a broken heart?  Things just didnt work out, i did love him  but couldnt trust him and he is not the man he portrayed himself to be, we parted on friendly terms but my heart hurts and sometimes i feel so lonely, i know i did the right thing breaking up with him, so why does it hurt so much

exactly what happened to me
I did nothing wrong but in the end i discovered too many false promises, deceit and lies and realized i loved someone who actually didnt exist, BUT it still hurts

I agree with needmymrright. Men need to be honest. She fell in love with the guy that he falsely portrayed himself to be. He actually wasn't what she dreamed of. What a catfish. So now what does she do? OMG Whose fault is that? Of course the guy will never admit he is in the wrong. It's always the woman's fault.
OP get involved with some group activity. I have to see your profile. I don't know what people your age do, but keep very busy. If you are a Veteran, there are field trips to the Getty Villa, the Ronald Reagun Library, talent shows, Olympic type sports outta state, and rec room activities such as Tai Chi.  I've always likes that shampoo commercial that sez, "I gotta wash that man right outta my hair". You can do this. If it's your first heartbreak, "the first cut is the deepest" (rod Stewart).

Talking to others going through a similar experience worked for me.
I spent over 4 years doing one on one grief counseling after the love over my life passed away from cancer and just couldn't get over it.
Then someone recommended a grief support group and in less than a year I found myself finally being able to let go of all the hurt anger and grief of losing her.
I'm doing much better now and though I still think of her and miss her from time to time it's nowhere near as bad as it was in the beginning.

Move on to someone new now. Don't wait. Pain is part of life...part of growing. Accept it, move on, distract yourself with someone new, and the pain-and memories-will fade. I once went from breaking up with one woman to finding a new woman, and having a first date with the newbie, in just two hours. Life is too short to waste any of it grieving for someone who isn't worth even thinking about. Move on.
It hurts so much because-like a fool-you sit around, and think about how much it hurts.

all you have to do is just always think positive ,,,and move on with your life slowly but surely ....make yourself more beautiful and appealing ....do mingle with your other friends ,,,go out and have a good time ,,,avoid the places where both of you have a nice time together or your dating places ...in this way you can easily move on...just saying

If he was not the man he portrayed himself to be , then you never loved the real him, just the false picture he presented. It hurts cuz it's fun to 'be in love'~ It feels bad when the rug gets pulled out from under you. And you're no longer in love. Just hurting and jonesing for the feeling, not necessarily for the guy.
Kind of like quitting smoking. You miss the 'hit of nic' desperately when you quit, but in time the cravings subside.
Consider him just a bad habit you're going to kick!

As much as you may love him, if you cant form the three foundations in love, trust, and commitment towards one another, this will have only lead you into having heartbreak down the road. It hurts because you saw something in him that made him stand out on terms of character of personality, but the the character flaws within his personality and his approach to relationships ruined that for you. You know that you have the done the right thing internally in terms of safeguarding yourself from hurt, loss and bitterness, but the initial backlash is what is stinging you right now. Time heal all and you will grow from this to find a better man. Best of luck....gamer

I recently went through heartbreak too; what helped was giving myself permission to think about him as much as I wanted (needed) instead of trying to suppress all memories of him. And also remembering all the reasons why things could not have worked with him, no matter how much I loved him. The best of luck to you.

This actually happened to me but I was the perp. I feel in love with her at first site and would have given my life for her. My problem was, I might not have been as truthful as I should have been. I also overlooked alot of her faults because I really wanted this to work and maybe I can give up completey my past. That is trade her faults for my past.
She would not have it. Her daughter found out by a phone hack I was not telling the complete truth and that was that. OVER.
It broke my heart and soul.
Finding a man without baggage that no other women would ever want for the last 20 years is rather impossible.

Yeah. Way to be...not. Or do you sit, huddled, in the corner...weeping your eyes out, hoping the ex will come back to you, and make it all better? That is no good, either. All it does is hold you back, and hurt you more. As just demonstrated, there are two alternatives to moving on quickly, and neither is positive, progressive, productive, or otherwise worth a shit. Why does it not surprise me that one of them would be YOUR choice. Could it be because YOU are not worth a shit? probably so. Keep up the good work...of being a bad example.

Because u have a heart. Make sure when u think of him u think of the BAD times and not the good. A lot of people think of the good times and forget how bad it really was.
Time will heal your wounds. Feel your feelings and cry if u must, but do not let bad feelings take hold for too long. Write a good bye letter mail it to no one with no return address.

Have you had many losses in life or let downs that are deep rooted? If so be careful to separate the now experiences from the past. Throw yourself into something anything new ... Maybe like a dance class...YouTube loneliness and you'll come up with some great supportive videos.

One of the things about growing older is that many of us have a variety of experiences. More than once I have been dumped with the explanation that "I was way too nice so there must either be something wrong with me or I am hiding something." Been also called very nice but, I guess the kiss of death, just a normal person and not exciting.
Funny though, more than once the same lady has called me a couple years later saying dumping me was the dumbest thing she ever did. Oh well, life goes on.
OP, the question is what is inside you and how long it will take to realize that it just wasn't the right thing for you and then you move on. For some it is a matter of minutes or hours. Others have much more trouble with the idea that the only person who will help you is yourself and only you can drag yourself out from under the "broken heart."
The best thing I have found is to understand that you didn't do anything and its time to move on and then do so.

It is difficult to get over having your heart broken. I think being occupied by work, family, friends & things you enjoy doing help. Time also helps.

It has been a couple years since my last heartbreak I guess..
I would say the only way to get over it is time..
Getting with other people to get over it is toxic...and creates other problems.
To answer why it hurts soo much..
That is due to people being broken and hurt and not knowing how to open up to people..
To me opening up is not a process that involves trust..as many people believe it should.
