Teachers, have you heard of STEM?

America must provide students with a strong education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to prepare them to succeed in the global economy. Scientists and engineers create many of the innovations that drive our Nation’s competitiveness, yet many American students are unprepared in math and science, particularly students from underrepresented groups, and the nation’s STEM workforce needs are not being met.
Federal agencies have developed a range of programs over the years in order to advance STEM education, but recognize the need for continued improvement. In 2014, the President's Budget proposed a framework for delivering STEM education to more students and more teachers more effectively. The Administration has also published a Federal STEM Education Five-Year Strategic Plan to help align the framework with key goals and strategies. The major areas of priority for this plan include: improving pre-kindergarten-through-grade-twelve (pre-K-12) STEM instruction; increasing and sustaining youth and public engagement in STEM; enhancing the STEM experience of undergraduate students; better serving groups historically underrepresented in STEM; and designing graduate education for tomorrow’s STEM workforce........more at www2.ed.gov

There is a great article entitled, "Focus on Stem Overshadows importance of music education/Michigan Radio"....this is too bad. (Great article by the way!) Unable to paste it.

Some children/grandchildren are very interested in learning a musical instrument, unfortunately for grades 1-5 in Michigan it has all but disappeared. I have a student in my household that has been interested in playing violin for 2 years, we have resorted to private lessons, no problem, but what happened to the music in the school systems?

I am not saying math and science isn't important, but now music appears to be making a disappearance.

Too bad for everyone!

Unfortuneately, music and art go... but they never cut the sports programs. Music is so important... as are the other arts. I help the local school system's music program and will do whatever possible... it gave a lot to me, the least I can do is try and give a little back. Why things like that are so important and can enrich so many lives yet are the first things sacrificed is beyond me... but I'll do what I can, and it's probably the same all over.

I like your philosophy!

The grades targeted here in MI are grades 1-5. This is discouraging for those that have an 'early' interest. My grandson has an excellent private instructor who took him this year when he turned 7, although he had advertised beginning with age 8. I thought his interest would fade, (he was interested in the violin last year), when it didn't wane we went ahead with inquiring where he could go. Luckily, we found this gentleman.

Thank you for what you do!
