The best way I've run across to understand your own dreams, is to start from the realization that they are all essentially you, telling yourself a story, starring you, costarring you, produced and directed by you, and based on an original idea by you.
Add in one more common factor: it's very common for all of us to try to avoid blame or responsibility for actions we take when we are in doubt.
In your dream, "you" discovered that "you" were still emotionally involved with "you," which made "you" angry, so "you" killed "you." And "you" were upset by all this.
Take some time to put yourself in each role, and then look carefully at how you FEEL as that person. You are likely to be able to work it all out yourself that way.
My instant analysis GUESS, is that you wanted to feel completely free of your ex, so that you could be completely involved with who ever your nEXt will be. You simultaneously resent the fact that you still have feelings for you ex, or at least that your life is sadder because you had to break up; at the same time, you still want to believe in the value of Love, and that's a conflict. If you declare your love for your ex to be meaningless in order to completely free yourself from him/her emotionally, you have to give up on love itself, which you don't want to do.
So instead, you "kill" your ex in effigy in your dreams. That solves your main problem, and allows you to move on to your nEXt, but since you did all this by taking a shortcut that you feel bad about, you are upset with yourself, and turned your own attempt to free yourself into a criminal act. That way, you both get to be free of your ex, AND you get to punish yourself for giving up on Love, which in turn will convince Love that you are really okay, and Love will excuse you and let you find your nEXt.

Don't take all dreams from the past too lightly...I learned this recently and let's just say the premonition either came true or it was destined to come true by me knowing about it. Trivial dreams mean nothing which are pretty common...however recurring or more complex ones have more significance. If they have continuous structure building on a theme you are either subconsciously thinking about this or the signs are there for a purpose even the process cannot be fully understood yet.

It means nothing. Weird dreams are just part of who we are. I often have very deeply involved dreams that I am some sort of secret agent or detective, trying to track down foul criminals. Sometimes they are trying to get me too. These dreams can get rather interesting. I will often keep having the same dream all night, waking, and then going back to sleep to start up right where I left off.
