Driving With the Devil. The real history of NASCAR. Probably 95% true. The author didn't point out a connection to any kind of Dixie mafia though. I liked it.

I'll have to explain this one first. Indiana University used to have a very famous/infamous basketball coach (Bobby Knight). He's the type of individual whom folks either loved or hated. There seemed to be no middle ground with him. Personally I met the man once as a contractor. I found him respectful, charismatic (yeah OK with a dry sense of humor), and just plain fun to talk to.
His book title is a play on words from Norman Vincent Peale's Power of Positive Thinking. In this case Knight's book The Power of Negative Thinking gives several analogies of his coaching style and the way it relates to other areas.
Final thought, just don't read it if you're easily offended.

I feel compelled to recommend Jill Bialosky. Jill Is a poet turned novelist. I read 2 drop dead gorgeous books by her. "The Life Room" and "House Under Snow".

BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO- Mary Gaitskill- Great short stories. Mary also wrote an excellent novel called "Veronica".

DIARY OF A BAD YEAR- J M Coetzee. Novel cleverly interspersed with diary notations & mini essays.

CROSSING TO SAFETY -Wallace Stegner Wonderful &
sensitive portrait of older couples. Absolute top shelf.

BIGFOOT DREAMS - Francine Prose Witty, satirical,
intelligent fun read. {lampoons Nat'l Inquirer type
rags}

WORLD'S END - T Coreghessan Boyle{Custer lookalike} Nifty writer

If you have a love for knowledge like history & and a bend towards stream of consciousness, then I recommend the well-regarded trilogy by John Dos Passos.
His major work is the trilogy U.S.A.

at the moment i am reading
:

'women crime writers: four suspense novels of the 1940s' - it's got the classic 'laura' by vera caspary and i've just finished a very good 'the blank wall' by elisabeth sankay holding, which was also made into a noir movie that's on youtube as 'the reckless moment'

and i'm enjoying 'at the existentialist cafe: freedom, being, and apricot c*cktails' by sarah blakewell. this is an excellent work.

i recently finished a detective novel by anny perry. enjoyed it so much got 4 of her books from ebay. this woman has had quite a life that almost landed her in jail for accessory to murder as a teen.
