How likely is it that a traveling mechanic can come to where I live and diagnose and fix my brakes if its not the pads but a line? (I live in hartford, ct and am stranded home and not in a good financial position to afford a tow to a garage) also, if there is Anyone in this area that would like to seriously teach me how to change brake pads I want to learn. Also, ive changed my own oil before but would like a review on that too! (((If anyone wants to get a kick out of showing me how)))

Why do you think it's a brake line?

A metal brake line? Rusted out? Or is it the brake hose going into the caliper?

Something to remember when hiring a 'mobile mechanic' is to make sure they are insured. If they aren't, and they do shoddy work or your vehicle is damaged while they're doing the repairs, or they sell you a sub par brake job and you're on the freeway and your brakes fail and you smash into a guardrail or another car, then any costs/loss/damages will be yours to pay for. That's why these 'shade tree mechanics' are cheaper. They're not paying the overhead of insurance.

@dixie. I know nothing about cars. My friend said it sounded like its not pads because my pedal goes to the floor easily. And, good point. I thought of that but im desperate. I literally am in middle of job seeking when my breaks went and stranded me. Luckily, my friend has someone now to look at it tomorrow for better clarity. I would like to learn how to do brake pads tho and be able to do it for others...

That doesn't mean a brake line. Could actually be brake pads. Could be a caliper. Could be a hose. Could and most likely is a brake master cylinder.

I saw in another post you are driving an 89 Honda. There's a lot more to changing pads than just a few bolts. Even those cars have special retaining bolt on the rotors that often seizes up. You can drill it out. But you'll need the knowledge and equipment to do that. You'll also need a tool to compress the calipers just to get the brake pads into the caliper and installed around the rotor. On a lot of newer cars you'll need an actual diagnostic computer to electronically adjust and reset the calipers.

While SOME brake jobs can be simple, there is a lot to know and understand.

Again, as I mentioned above, be careful 'doing work for friends'. Screw something up, and if there is any doubt that you could have been at fault for a brake failure, they can sue you, unless you invest in business insurance even then you most likely will be out your time and some money hiring a lawyer and going to court if somebody does use you. Keep in mind, you may be thinking 'well they're just my friends, they wouldn't sue me'. What about the pedestrian or other vehicle they may crash into if something fails?

There's a lot more risk to the occupants and other motorists and pedestrians if a brake failure occurs, whereas you screw up your own oil change, a lot less physical harm risk if something fails from that.

One of the best things about taking to your car and paying a SPECIALIST to do your repairs, is they can notice things with their trained eye that you would have no idea to look for. Worn brake hoses, bulging hoses, chafed ABS wires, torn cv boots, loose ball joints, broken tie rod ends. The list goes on and on.

Depending on how you drive, is it REALLY worth saving $100 every few years by doing your own brake jobs (and risking costlier repairs on other components because you didn't catch them early enough)?

Food for thought.

Ummmmmmm. So this mobil mechanic worked on my car. Because basically im like in poverty and my friend used him. He tried to save me money but what was supposed to be an hour turned into all afternoon. I payed him and had to go back to the parts store three times because the line is rusted and kept breaking. Then when all was done not only did he tell me to get a new break line altogether asap but that everything is rotted and near broken down and if he were me he would look for new car asap too!!!! And, im in the middle of finding work just to be surviving no less! So now im scared ill be taking the bus soon!

if your brake system is in as bad a condition, as the mechanic said; try to avoid jamming on your brakes real hard, it could blow a rusted brake line, and you will have no brakes, and cannot stop, try to stop as easy as possible. unti repairs are made.

Back in the day when I was in still in school, people in your predicament would bring in their vehicles for us students to wrench. There was NO charge for any labor, because we were learning. The only charges the customers received were for parts. And of course, towing if need be.

The repairs were over seen by the instructors, and had to be signed off before they were released back to the owners. You should do a little calling around to the local tech and vocational centers to see if this very same program is still in effect.

I don't know many automotive tech schools or high schools that are in session over the summer.

You're driving an 89 Honda in the northeast. Im not surprised your metal brake lines are rusted, let alone lots and lots of things. Why he spent half the day working on this troubles me. I've replaced a whole series of brake lines on a Honda before - custom bending each line and still accomplished the whole task, to include bleeding the brakes in a half a day.

replaceing all the brake lines, removing the old brake lines, and installing new brake lines, and custom bending them to go thru and around the frame of a car or truck, bleeding the air out, is quite an accompolishment in 4 hours, especially doing it alone.

you can order factor brake lines, already cut, and bent to fit the auto you need them for, but a little more expensive.
