Take it from a "Lifer" Pick a good career field, and rejoin. Get the training and stick it out. 20 will come fast.

I am curious as to what you did in the prior enlistment, would you stay with that or attempt some other training?
When I came back from Nam, the 1st year I was home I ended up with 17 W2's..Nothing could touch, challenge, or even offer any thing more than the mundane. Ad the second anyone gave me any kind of chit, I was history.
I finally found a job as a Torch Man, for a foundry, spend the entire 8-10 hrs a day, outside cutting upper scrap steel into small enough pieces for the melting pot. I was by myself, no one f**ked with me, because I worked.
Ended up 10 years with a Fire Dept in Fla, that job fed the Beast....
I had considered re-enlist after my 1st year home, but I had also considered Suicide. Either way, I lose.....
Sorry, I digress, but your topic gave me some back track moments..
It really does not matter what other folks think about your plan, your wife's opinion certainly does and so do your kids.
I wish you the best, military careers have their advantage's, my brother recently retired, after 35 year's with the 82nd...He did well started as a Private retired as a Warrant Officer. He once told me that he Loved being a WO. He called everyone by their 1st name and they all called him Chief..LoL
Good Luck Brother
Walter

Look into the Coast Guard. The Coasties have a genuine peace time mission. I tried to switch 12 years into an Air Force/Air National Guard career. Was told that I couldn't guarantee 10 years (meaning I could retire with 8 more) and the CG didn't want to pick up my retirement.

Well, when I retired at 42 years old with 24 years of service, a good pension for the rest of my life, a college degree and another four years of college paid for I didn't come across any 42 year old civilians who were in the same situation.

of course there's nothing wrong with being a marine but you seem to have a confidence problem, my friend. i can't imagine ever going to an open forum and ask if it's wrong to want to rejoin to take care of my family. not very marine like.

so you can't decide that your friends may be wrong so you ask a bunch of strangers? either your self esteem is in the tank or your confidence is. i wouldn't think the army, let alone the marines are interested in either. man up. sorry but you asked.

i got out at nine years and often think that i may have made a mistake being almost half way to retirement. i was on the cw3 list and would have been promoted within six months and would have easily retired as a cw4 making what a light colonel made. the army was all i knew as employment goes and with a wife and two young kids i really had concerns that i could make it in the civilian world. but the army really sucked after vietnam and captains and majors and many senior nco's were coming up with all kinds of shit to hang onto their jobs that made no sense as the rifs kept comming. but i went on to enjoy a fantastic civilian flying career that i never would have had had i not moved on with my life. life is what you make it. i say again, this guy needs to man up.

I did 12yrs Air Force. Worked good jobs.
