A new study claims to have conclusively proved that the more intelligent a person is the less likely they are to believe in God.

Psychologists Miron Zuckerman and Jordan Silberman of the University of Rochester and Judith Hall of Northeastern University have published their review of 63 studies conducted between 1928 and 2012 in this months Personality and Social Psychology Review.

While they admit their findings are 'not new', the psychologists embarked on a systematic analysis of almost one hundred years of studies into the correlation between intelligence and religiosity and found that atheism is rife among clever people.

There is nothing stupid about a belief in God...

There have been some really stupid people try and justify some very stupid things due to their belief...

But the belief itself is not stupid in any way...

I guess when you have two atheists conducing studies the results are bound to turn out in favor of the atheists.

But did you know that physiological studies rarely ever achieve the same results if repeated.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.

The controversial ruling comes after a 5-year study by the APA showed devoutly religious people often suffered from anxiety, emotional distress, hallucinations, and paranoia. The study stated that those who perceived God as punitive was directly related to their poorer health, while those who viewed God as benevolent did not suffer as many mental problems. The religious views of both groups often resulted in them being disconnected from reality.

Dr. Lillian Andrews, professor of psychology, stated, “Every year thousands of people die after refusing life-saving treatment on religious grounds. Even when being told ‘you will die without this treatment’ patients reject the idea and believe that their God will still save them. Those lives could be saved simply by classifying those people as mentally unfit for decision making.”

But how could that be? How could mere mortals simply get rid of God?

And why would a government of the working class (communism) want to get rid of God?

Actually what has been proven as fact is man has evolved and still evolves today...

What has not been proven is what life did man evolve from and where did it come from if there was no God...

I can get as irreverent with Christians as they get with me, but, in my not so humble opinion, calling people stupid for believing in god is as pointless as calling people stupid for not believing. This argument goes no where fast and only makes both sides dig in further.

The very same arguments are then used by Christians against you.

I'm not an atheist because I am stupid, I'm an atheist because after much research, Christians have not convinced me their god exists, nor is any other god man has worshiped over time convincing to me. Especially when their gods are conveniently invisible.

I have had Christians tell me that after much research they came to the conclusion god did exist. They can't prove it any more than I can prove otherwise, so the only logical thing to do is keep religion and law separate and let people believe what they want as long as they do not use those beliefs to harm or deny others.

I'd say that there is a larger number of people that severely question the authenticity of religion and don't have a problem challenging it, more so now than at any other time. Which is a good thing. People aren't always anxious to say exactly what they believe because they fear those that either believe or don't believe.

People that never had a voice, now do, and that alone is progress. We no longer have to be intimidated by fundamentalist believers. We can be just as passionate in our disbelief as they are in their belief.

Things have gotten ugly simply because there are folks that do not like being challenged or having their gods challenged. They don't like seeing people their gods don't approve of, having the same privileges they have always taken for granted. As long as we fixate on winners and losers we will remain at each others throats. sad....

People have always challenged religion to some degree, but religious authoritarians have managed to maintain power and control, the lose of that kind of control can cause deep anxieties in those that always assumed they were in control.

If you want people like me, ex-christians to believe in a god, your going to have to make him way more believable and less vengeful and petty and actually visible. And stop using him/her to manipulate the entire world. I'd say that most Christians can live with non believers. And non believers can live with believers that don't use their religion to manipulate others.

I think the opposite can be said as well. Men despise disbelief in their gods because they fear their god just may not actually exist and they spent their lives condemning others for nothing.

Being an ex-christian both has crossed my mind. The only thing that keeps me atheist are notions that any loving all powerful god could possible create something as hideous as eternal damnation. Or a god that could be so impatient and so irresponsible he would kill off his entire creation to punish a few that didn't do things as he demanded, yet knew ahead of time they would do.

Nothing just about that kind of overkill.

It's kind of pointless to despise religion consider that even Christians don't agree on it. What is worth of despise are people that play god and use their particular interpretations to manipulate others. Sadly Christians don't just do that to non believers, they do it to each other. With that kind of god, no human beings can have faith in each other, but then that's the point of a god that demands all the attention. It seems most of the gods we have worshiped depend on our willingness to see ourselves as helpless and unworthy and to see each other in the same way.

I can't bring myself to believe in an entity as manipulative as his followers.

That can be said of both Christians and atheists alike. Both accuse each other of being stupid.

Though come to think of it, it's rather silly to endlessly fight over something we can't actually prove of disprove to any ones satisfaction. The fundementalist fanatics among us seem to need this kind of endless debate while the rest of he world goes about life doing the best they can to survive. Aren't we fortunate we have the time to waste arguing about things we will never agree on.

I simply expect proof before I spend an entire life time devoted to something that may or may not be true.

One would think we could easily find ways to coexist with out fantasizing. We actually have already in most cases. I've done quite well in my adult life with out a belief in god and many off my christian friends seem to have done well believing, and all with out forcing anything on each other.

Condor, you say: “The fact of the matter is that science has proven for a fact that man evolved from more primitive life forms while nobody has ever proven the existence of a god. Any god. In fact, there is exactly the same amount of proof that the Great Pumpkin exists as there is that any other god exists.”

There is no proof that man evolved from monkeys or green slime or whatever. In fact, Darwin himself stated that the principal flaw in the theory of the evolution of man evolving from lower life forms is that "there is no physical evidence for it". Freemasons, who are waging war against God the Creator, have tried to bastardize science by claiming there is evidence for it, just as they are presently bastardizing science with their man-made global warming claims.

Condor, you are your own god, and you exist; do you dispute that you exist? Atheists have no proof that God does not exist, for it is impossible to prove an absolute negative. Atheists take the non-existence of God on faith and faith along. Atheism is their religion, and the non-existence of God is the central doctrine. The reason that Atheists are Atheists is that they are their own gods, and they will have no other gods before them. They will not subject to any other God, including their Creator.

Christians, on the other hand, do have evidence that God and the spiritual world exists. For example, there are tens of thousands of life after death experiences in which someone dies, their spirit leaves their body and goes to Heaven or Hell, sees and talks to God, and is then resuscitated and back in their body telling what they have seen. These are eyewitness accounts, sometimes given under sworn oath. During the time of their experience, they were clinically dead, no heart beat, no breath, no brain waves, dropping body temperature, and so on. And, no, dead brains do NOT dream or hallucinate.

And Condor, you claim: “And yet God never comes to the rescue of anyone. Why not? All throughout history, the most useless act anyone could undertake has been praying to a god”.

To the contrary, dozens of studies have been done on people praying in hospitals, either for themselves or for others, and prayer has been shown in these cases to result in faster recoveries with fewer complications, and in some cases, in miraculous and unexplainable recoveries. Miracles do happen, that that is well documented. You can choose not to believe any of this, but it's there.

Louie

Most Jews do not like to admit it, but our god is Lucifer... - and we are his chosen people. Lucifer is very much alive." -- Harold Wallace Rosenthal

And that is why religion likes Stupid people!

My education is a couple of years beyond high school. I consider myself to be Agnostic. But, I was Indoctrinated as a child into the Christian Religion. I found the Legend of Jesus Christ to be Very Appealing. His Teachings are still influencing my life's decisions. I consider Him to have been a Wise Man! But that is where it Ends with me. It is Not so much religion that I find Offensive! It Is The Bible/Koran Thumping Hypocrisy of the professed Believers That Turned me against Religion. What Jesus taught and what the people of the church practice were at complete odds.

That is why republicans are against education. They Know Stupid People are Easy to Take Advantage of.

Jesus made a number of very clear statements about money and wealth in the Bible. For example:

Matthew 6:19

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke 14:33
Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money.
Matthew 19:21-24
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

The message is clear. If you want to follow Jesus, you need to "sell your possessions and give to the poor." It is a very simple message, and easy to do. Have you done it? The fact that you are reading this page would indicate that you have not. Chances are you own a computer, pay for an Internet connection every month, live in a home or apartment, have a car, etc. In other words, you live a life at a level of wealth unimaginable in Jesus' time. Meanwhile, billions of people on the planet live in startling, abject poverty.
Why don't you sell everything and follow Jesus, as he requests in the Bible? The reason is simple: Jesus and God are imaginary, and you know it. If Jesus were real, you would do what he says.

Calling people stupid for it might be stretching it a little, illinformed, insecure, scared of the unknown, lots of other words.

Religion is a hard thing to remove from a persons life, especially when it was pounded into them from birth. Most religions are pretty harmless, some are pure evil, and it takes an evolution process to get rid of it in a general population aspect.

Few people can turn it off like a switch.
