I've only been here since October. I visited over the summer and loved it so decided that since I was having life altering changes a move may as well be one of them.

This winter weather though......yikes. Yes I was warned and yes I had seen it over the years on the weather channel and what not. Nothing prepares you for the reality though.

For now, here I am and here I'll stay but honestly, I'll be eventually moving to a more gentle winter climate.............

I was born/raised less than 2 miles from where I'm sitting now and lived in many other cities over the years.

The only things about South Dakota I don't like are the climate and unavailability of some foods. FRESH seafood in particular, sorry folx, frozen is NOT fresh. Then again when I was living on the left coast I couldn't even steal a good steak, they don't know what corn-fed aged beef is.

I figure if the climate was like San Diego here everyone would want to move here and it would be californicated in no time.

All things considered I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, at least until I retire.

I did warn you Newlife, just wait until it really gets cold

Oh it isn't just fresh seafood that is missing lol....................I have yet to see any Lox, and only one true bagel store. Finding ricotta cheese became an all out reconnaissance mission, but then again I've seen a lot more things like duck and lefse that you either don't see at all or rarely see on the east coast. There also seems to be a bit more selection of some things in the produce aisles - even to the point of somethings I've never seen.

I like the slower pace here over either of the coasts. I love downtown, with the trolley and the art walk. I love all the little shops and the museums. I loved the zoo and can't wait to hit the butterfly sanctuary. I love Sioux Falls Park. All in all it just seems like a great place to raise your kids with enough adult stuff to do if ya want to do anything.

Course, I'd love it more if I could finally land a job lol.

So SD, with neither of us liking winter much seems we are going to need to discuss early retirement lol.

Oh and Rich - yes I do understand about the clothing...........just having been raised in So Cal I have never been comfortable all bundled up.

Left SD 18 years ago, but do visit family regularly. Have been back in both the hot and cold seasons, and niether are great. I like SD because of the people.
If it wasn't for the good people that work and play in SD, doubt I would be moving back. Do miss the Black Hills though.

Born and raised in and around Sioux Falls. Spent six years down south but missed all the good down to earth people here and came back. Probably never leave again.

I have lived in southern Minnesota, Lincoln NE, and here. Really not to much difference except in Lincoln the winters are much shorter which adds more time to the other seasons and the sun shines more often.

South Dakota is home for me and the flat plains are familiar. You know, your dog runs away and you can still see him for three days!!! The people are solid because only solid people would endure the harshness that a South Dakota winter can bring....but it is that harshness that bonds people together as they live through it.

But I am not going to stay here. I am going to move to Sioux City Iowa this year which is again, a little further south but still close enough to experience the change of seasons. Just my 2 cents worth......

Lots to like and some to dislike. I left SD a couple of times. Love the flinthills of KS, the sandhills of NE, and the intertainment further south; but keep coming back to SD. Obviously, it is the best place for me right now or I would not be here.

Nothing to do? I have to disagree. I have signed up for the City's auto email thingy that tells what all is going on around town....seems there is always something. Then there is that channel - can't remember the number - that tells all the local shindigs as well.

While I agree there might not be AS MUCH to do in the winter, there still seems to be plenty going on. There are loads of museums, the art walk downtown, all the different parks, the bike trail. And for a city out and away from either coast there are certainly more than a few different restaurants to try out.

No, I'd hardly agree that there is nothing to do.............its all in your perspective.

If your into the "club scene" then Sioux Falls doesn't have much to offer but I've never been a clubber anyway.

I grew up here and moved away for about 10 years and between 1992 and 2002 Sioux Falls really "grew up". There is more to do now and City Council meetings still look entertaining

We have several sports teams, a Canaries game on a warm, spring evening...

I lived in the SF/Berkeley area for 2 years and didn't find much more to do there except Art shows.

Then there's the burnt bread exibit

OMG SD - Yes yes yes the burnt bread exhibit.........of all the gosh darned most stupid things I've ever seen in my life - but seriously, you've got to see it and get pictures because anybody who hasn't seen it will never in a million years believe it.

It is simply amazing what some will consider art........

If you really want excitement, wait until its dark and take a walk on the bike trail from the Falls to cherry rock bridge.

No thanks

I had enough of tripping over drunks when I was working at the Metro Detox about 20 years ago

Not so bad this time of year, they tend to hang around downtown near the Library so they can get warm.

I've seen my fair share of drunks in the Mission District in LA where you never had to wait till dark to be tripping over them and since the weather is decent all year - you never got a break from them.

Hmmmm, I've even had drunk customers already this season..............gotta love service jobs (NOT).

If they are not at the library, you can usually find me throwing them out of where I work and live. About 2 blocks from there.

I miss South Dakota. I shouldn't have ever left. I'm not unhappy here in Georgia, but there are times when I wish I were back home again. I might not live there anymore, but I'm fortunate to be able to say that I was born and raised in South Dakota!

Last time there was a serious effort to pass a State income tax there were people on the Capitol steps holding nooses to "remind" the Legislators that we didn't want one

I am happy with where I live now, but there are times when I really miss South Dakota. Dad's calving right now.... wish I were home to see the baby calves. I really need to save up some money so I can go visit. I'm aiming for June 2010.

I do miss the beauty of SD, the people and their ways and of course I miss my family... but I have a really good full time job down here... and another part time job that suppliments my income so that the children and I can afford the little extras in life. And... my children are doing VERY well down here. When my oldest daughter is old enough to help drive (next summer), I'm planning to take a 2 to 3 week trip to Minnesota to see my oldest son, SD to visit family and old friends and to Montana to visit my stepdaughter (ex's oldest child).

We don't want the Californicators hearing about how good we have it then move here and screw it up

I enjoy the hell out of living in South Dakota. I've lived here for 19 years now and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. (Not to say I wont for the right job, woman, etc...)
I lived in Aberdeen for 9 years, Ipswich for almost a year, and in Sioux Falls the remainder of the time. I grew up in a military family and we move almost every summer. 15 times by the time I left home at 17 to attend college.

I like it here... I love it here... I consider it my Home !!!

Isn't Ipswitch where some landfill was built in the 80's? I remember something about that when I was in high school. I attended the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. We were all supposed to bring mementos from our local community to hand out to other kids and I remember some girl who I'm pretty sure was from Ipswitch handing out pencils and pins that said "Vote for the Landfill" ... but probably w/a more catchy phrase....

Wherever it was at... I do remember it being a pretty big ordeal.. some didn't want it and others did... but I don't remember if it was voted in or not.

I like it but I also dont know of anything different! Raised in Lennox, 26 years as a dairy farm wife down south of Beresford. My kids are still down there. And I have been in Sioux Falls for over 5 years now. I love the 4 seasons but love a break from winter when we were able to take trips south. I am very adaptable to farm life or city life.. I Love parts of both.. but miss alot about country life too. For me its all in who Im with and where they are!
