Patricia Briggs, with her Mercedes Thompson series.
Imagine Twilight, if you dare, but told from a first person perspective, written with a large dose of reality, and without all the mushy, Mary-sue drama. Then throw in the Fae, demons, and Native American spiritualism.
Oh... and the protagonist is already a part of the magical world, so no boring transformation period paragraphs and chapters.
It's really good, I highly recommend it.

THE FAVORITE?? Hmmm, my favorite of all time would have to be Neil Gaiman. His novel Neverwhere (Great Read!!) is exactly the journey fantasy should take you on. He has two projects that could be considered his magnum opus. The Sandman and American Gods. Magnum opuses?? Plus, his "Good Omens" (cowritten with Terry Pratchett) is the most I've ever laughed out loud while reading.

I know what you mean about uneven quality of a particular author's work. I've noticed
a great variety in the quality of work of numerous authors, including Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, Steven King, Patricia Cornwell, Janet Evanovich.
I have a hunch many of those are their earlier works, which can now be published
because anything with their names on it will sell.
