Having such a nutty, delusional, and flighty mother raise him,
he just might have went to Alaska with only shorts and a t-shirt! lol

My son has been traveling and living his dreams for the past 2 1/2 years.
Today he arrived in Anchorage. (In a van he bought and modified just for the trip to AK)
He wants to work on a fishing boat.
I am not happy about it but I am supportive and happy for him that he is "living" and enjoying his life.
Any words of wisdom I can share with him for surviving in your state?

Sounds like he made a good choice for a place to live.Alaska that is,not Anchorage, lol. He'll do fine there.Much better than the lower 48.Lots of oportunities for a good worker! My boy left home for the middle east fightin pirates. He can't wait to come back to our place north of Fairbanks & build his home there. I was on my own at 15 & went to the hills trappin, So don't worry mom. He'll do just fine.Just tell him not to get any girls pregnant,LOL. Other words of wisdom are work hard & be honest & he'll go far. It's a small nit state even with all the space.

He will be in Alaska for a few months and then he will be off to other destinations. I guess I need to count my blessings that my son isn't in the Middle East right now! As for getting girls pregnant--we have had many conversations on that situation. He has places he wants to see and things he wants to do, and he is determined to do them before he attempts to settle down. He realizes getting himself into a "family" situation will change all that and put a hault to his explorations. Funny that you would say "work hard and be honest." In our conversation yesterday he said he was just going to go to the docks and tell them he is willing to work hard, and do whatever it takes and once they saw that he was a hard and honest worker, and what kind of person he is, more opportunities would open up for him. As for Mom not worrying...LOL... not a chance! lol Thanks for your reply!

He may like it enough to stay.If he stays a full year he can get better money. People don't like to hire those who work the summer & then take their money outside to spend it. It's not good on the economy. There's big money to be made for someone who stays year round. My boy made $20 an hour doin yard work & there's no state income tax or sales tax or property tax. Winter is the fun time too. With a snow-go you can get out & visit folks etc. My boy misses it big time, but has 3 more years to go. He signed up for 5.It has been good for him though. Before he went in he knew everything & I knew nothing.(that's a good time to move out while you still know everything) After boot camp he apologised for givin me such a hard time & said I was right about everything after all, lol. As fer girls ,they can trick ya quick. I've never met an honest one yet. Maybe someday I hope.

Thanks for your response Dan.
A deckhand license?? Yikes! He hasn't mentioned that to me. I bet he is not aware of that! How much are they?
Now I'm really worried! lol I talked to him last night and I asked him how his money was holding out. He said gas cost him more than he expected to get through Canada. But he had a few things he could sell. He was headed for Homer. What's Homer like?

I have freinds that live in Homer. It's nice, but pricy ta live there. If I were young & startin out ,I'd get a slope job & really put up the money. Things tend ta shut down in winter fer most jobs.

1Alaska-
He won't be there in the winter--he's only staying for a few months--he really wants to work on a fishing boat--and I'm sure he will, one way or another. Thanks for your responses!

This first picture is on the hill as you come into Homer, stickin out there in the water is the world famous Homer Spit.....
This little light house on the Homer spit is a bar called the Salty Dog,It has one dollar bills hanging on the walls and ceiling with peoples names and addresses from all over the world.
This last shot is a few of the Homer Docks.
Its almost to late to try to find a hole open on a boat,There are plenty of canaries, and they usually need help.if the kid has any problems down there weve a few canaries here and a fair sized salmon fleet. He will have to go right thru Kenai on his way to Homer.....LUCK..........

Biker, Thank you for the beautiful pictures!
I talked to my son last night to see how his first night/day in Homer went.
His words, "This is what I have been traveling to find. I feel like I'm supposed to be here." He has found where he wants to call home for the rest of his life.
As for working on the fishing boat... He was told that the boats left, but in a week or two they will return and there will be openings. Some guys mouth-off to the captains and they are fired when they get back to the docks. So, he still has a chance. He sent me a video of the fishing trips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRO6H8puHF8. Yikes! lol I don't understand! lol

Yer Welcome. See now. Don't be countin on him commin back, lol. Most Alaska bars do the signed dollar bill deal. It's a good way ta leave yer mark on the walls & not be destructive. You may have ta move up to see that boy as much as you want, lol.

So how did he do this summer there? My daughter & son-in-law are movin up to my place in April. They came up with me a couple weeks ago with a couple trailers of stuff & loved it. He had several good job offers too. They have 7month twin boys & 2 yr girl.
