Yes it's based on the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charline Harris. But as a HUGE fan of the books I have to admit to being disappointed by the series. True Blood is tantalizing, sex and alluring but most of the stuff season 2 is about isn't in the books. Also season 1 had alot of extras that were uncalled for and completely off topic from the book. The producers do seem to be trying to add parts of the book every other episode so that's a plus.

Although HBO's producers have altered some parts of the plot, Charlaine Harris herself said she's not upset with the way they've portrayed her books. On her web site's FAQ it says:
"Q. How much input do you have on “True Blood”? Are you pleased with the casting/Alan Ball/ the production?
A. I chose Alan Ball to bring the Sookie books to the screen because I trust his vision, and I am sure he will be true to the spirit of the books. I am delighted with the talented cast, Alan’s scripts and direction, and the look and feel of the production."

One of my best friends just gave me 7 Charlaine Harris books--4 of which are Sookie Stackhouse books. I haven't started them yet and honestly haven't been interested in the HBO series because I don't like the looks of any of the characters, especially the male who appears to be the alpha dog. But my friend swears I'll like these books, so as soon as I'm finished with my current read I will start these.
I read the back cover on the 1st of the Sookie Stackhouse series and realized that Charlaine Harris is the creator of Six Feet Under. Well. I think Six Feet Under is one of the most amazing TV series that HBO (or anybody ever did) aside from Angels in America, which was just awesome.

When I was reading the first book I was like "Wow True Blood is exactly like the book". I watched True Blood before reading the books.
After the 2nd chapter it just was completely different.
True Blood is nothing like the books.
Why make shit so different?
What's the point?
Why even put that it's based on a book....just because the people's names are the same?
It's ridiculous.
I do like True Blood because it has vampires and I'm a tad obsessed with them, but the books were amazing.

the point is so that we can enjoy them both.
if they were the same, i'd be more likely to miss an episode or not worry about getting the next book...since you could fill in the plot with either media.
however, with them being different, i'm freaking glued. i'm afraid to miss something...and i compare...and since both are so well-done, i'm loving every second. (note: i do not think charlaine harris is the the be-all and end-all of authors, but i certainly enjoy her universe.)

This is just my opinion, of course. But I think the show is way better than the books.

i like some of the changes that they made to the book to show- like making Layffette more of a interegral part of the show gave him more substance and made it more interesting to me because he wasn't really a big to do in the books! but i love the series waiting of Dead in the Family to be in paperback because all the rest of mines are paper back!

The Sookie Stackhouse series are amazing! why would they even make a tv series about them if its nothing like the books. at least twilight stays true, even though the movies are terrible (thanks alot robert pattinson and kristen stewart)
