This may offend and infuriate some while others will just nod and say, "Oh, yes.....I've noticed that, too!" I cannot think of one post on any thread by a Republican Conservative that contains correctly spelled words, grammatically correct English usage, or sensibly-constructed sentences. Most look like something an angry seventh-grader would throw together. On the other hand, the authors in the Liberal Democrats group show a far superior grasp of the English language, and have the ability to thoughtfully express themselves without a lot of name-calling and other rubbish. I, for one, appreciate reading what the Democrats have to say because they have the facts behind what they are saying. The Republican conservatives? No, thanks. Most of their remarks are sexist, degrading, and nothing more than a recitation of what they have heard someone else say. steveemac Milwaukee, WI 50, joined Oct. 2009	It's no coincidence: lower intelligence/intellectual ability goes hand-in-hand with bigotry, fear and superstition; and those most likely to suffer from one or more of these is the target group of the NeoCon/Regressive "brain trust"(I refuse to call them "Conservative" any longer; they want to conserve precious little except their own power and their own sense of superiority). Most Progressives are the way they are because they are not afraid of someone possibly getting a "hand up," or other such thing; we know that "the rising tide lifts all boats." Regressives, however, live in constant terror of whatever bogeymen that they are told to be afraid of by those that tell them how to think; people with the ability to reason, empathize, and think for themselves are less apt to be led about like so many sheep-and even less likely to lash out at others for having a different opinion. It's not limited to DH; go to ANY FORUM SITE that discusses politics, and you'll see the same patterns...you'll also notice the tendencies of the Regressives to "gang up" when one of them is challenged, and they are the most likely to run crying to a moderator to have someone's remarks edited/removed when they find themselves intellectually b*tch-slapped up and down the internet by someone that actually knows the difference between "to," "two," and "too." slapstick_37 Minneapolis, MN 62, joined Nov. 2009	Thanks for the good chuckle. I agree with everything you've said. It's so very true. I have relatives that are staunch Republicans, and honestly? They are insufferable. I can't figure out how they 'evolved' from my Democratic parents. Obviously, someone somewhere fed them a line. The fact that they (family Republicans) have become so vocal in both phone calls and emails to the rest of us has driven a horrible wedge in our family. I have had to divorce myself from frequent contact with any of them. Being subjected to the constant barrage of nonsense wears on my sanity. I truly wish there was a way to go through their tirades and correct the grammar and spelling. It would be my hope that all the 'red marks' would send them right over the edge, never to return!

How does it happen that a woman like Sara Palin is able to graduate from college? Or George W. Bush? Is there no requirement that a student be able to read and comprehend before graduating college or high school or grade school? My ex-wife's family ADORES George W. Bush. He's one of them. They don't read books! My ex-father-in-law told me that he never read one in his life! Not all the way through. And isn't it silly, according to him, that people write whole books full of stuff that they make up out of their own heads? (Some of us call that fiction.) The reason that their spelling, grammer and constuction are so bad is because they are doing the BEST THEY CAN DO!

When you mentioned the fact that your FIL never read a book all the way through, it reminded me of two things about my inlaws: 1) the only reading material in the entire house was the daily newspaper and the Bible, and 2) they never went to the dentist, either. In fact, my ex-husband would say, "I never HAD any problems with my teeth til I went to the dentist." DUH???? Of COURSE, you didn't KNOW about any problems until you went to the dentist! Complete and total idiocy. I appreciate your comments and enjoy reading them. You are very correct about the educational system, and until EVERYONE puts a value on good teachers (and pays them accordingly), we will continue to have teachers that are sub-standard. Now, before someone blasts me for that, I want to make sure that everyone understands that I am not talking about ALL teachers. There are some very, very good ones out there, and they do not get compensated as they should. I taught school right out of college, and then my life evolved to healthcare. I could not teach school any longer. My first words in class would be, "I'm here to teach. You are here to learn. Sit down and shut up."

Zorro, it happened in the South after the Civil Rights Bill was passed back in 1964, but the country did follow suit generally speaking when Reagan hatched Trickle Down Economics and sold it as a legitimate economic plan. And if someone is observant enough and has a minimal amount of independent thought, you can see it in ever facet of American life today - rights that we once had, but have relinquished to the very entities that prodded the simple minded to throw-off protections offered by Government for a tyranny by insurance companies, businesses, churches and local governments with a myopic view of american society, etc. They've done exactly what Mel Gibson feared in "The Patriot" - they've exchange one tyrant 3000 miles away with 3000 tyrants one mile away! What is even more disturbing is they actually believe they are more free with those 3000 tyrants controlling every aspect of their personal lives when they would have far more freedoms with that one tyrant 3000 miles away that is a lot more prone to want a level playing field than those local tyrants with their own petty and selfish motives.

zorro932 Middle River, MD 57, joined Jun. 2009	Hey Idle, I can't disagree with the above, certainly the South did leave the Democratic Party once the Civil Rights bill was passed. Bill Moyers tells a story about being in LBJ's office after the bill had been signed and everyone had left. Johnson said "I think we may have lost the South for a long time." He felt it was the right thing to do and thankfully he had the courage to do it, but he was dead right. Sometimes being right means losing political power. In my original post, I was referring to people of my generation. I was in college when Reagan came in, and I was dumbfounded at how right wing some of the students were. I was called a socialist plenty of times, and told that I should be putting money into the stock market. Knowing about 1929 I wasn't about to fall for that one, and I'll bet a lot of my classmates at the time got a cold slap in the face last year...

That said, I perceive then to be a racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, poorly educated, stupid, unenlightened, myopic, poorly informed bunch. And any disagreement with any of them results in degrading, insulting, ad hominum attacks. They can't spell, they can string together 2 or more cogent thoughts, but they can blister you with attacking remarks. I have been there and experienced it firsthand. It is why I do not post there anymore. I used to love to post there. I hate even coming into the site anymore because "they" have taken over Current Events & Politics. I don't have the heart, or skin thick enough, to even try to participate there. We need more people who can debate without insults. But its an internet phenomenon...hide behind a screen and keyboard and let it rip at anyone who dares to have an opinion other than your own. I see it elsewhere. Happy Holidays everyone. Pam

slapstick_37 Minneapolis, MN 62, joined Nov. 2009	I agree with you, Pam. It's so true. I have family members exactly like that, and it's difficult at best. Thanks for your thoughtful insight. I, too, find it hard to even look at or read the rest of the threads on DH because of these reasons, as well as those nasty individuals who have to sully every single topic with remarks about anything and everything except the topic at hand (e.g. blow jobs.... I think there are certain members who do nothing but think about that.....) I joined this site not only to find a possible friend/partner, but to make some friends who are like-minded. I don't think that's possible on this site after what I've read. There's one thread that makes me laugh: "What's for dinner tonight?" WHO CARES? I have looked at this a couple of times, and just shake my head. It goes on and on and on about the most mundane food items......... OK, I'm done. I got carried away with the mundane, too!
