If the profile has a photo, then how pleasing to the eye is the lady....and no I am not looking for young women with model figures & looks.
next:
if they smoke or not, for me smoking is definite turnoff, as is excessive drinking
a profile that is not full of cliche`s.....everybody seems to like candlelit dinners, walks on the beach etc
a profile that shows that the lady is over past relationships and is ready for a new relationship.....through the ups & downs life throws at us
a profile that shows the lady understands that my children are very important to me
for instance....sorry looseyloo....
looking at looseyloo's profile the initial contact is her photo and, in my opinion, she is a very attractive lady....
next....looseyloo doesn't smoke and drinks occassionally...so far so good
next...there is not a lot of information in the body of her profile so it doesn't really tell me much about her likes & dislikes, what she is looking for in a man etc
next....as looseyloo has not had children, the question for me would be if she would understand about the relationship i have with my children..
and of course....looseyloo lives in the states and here I am in Australia so obviously location plays a part too...
oh well.....sorry if I offended you looseyloo, I was giving an example

Thank you tsylos. These profiles are hard to write. For one, I think we are influenced by the profiles we've read in the past, and I've read a lot of them. You are right, I mean, who doesn't like fine dining or movies or walks in the park, right? It does sound cliche.
But, hey, anybody who's made it to 48 years is going to have a past. That doesn't necessarily mean baggage, just that we've lived. And aren't we all here because we are ready to move on?
Thanks for the advice, though, I'll be updating my profile today.
Have a great day "down under!"
looseyloo
P.S. About kids, remember, just because someone doesn't have kids doesn't mean they didn't want to.

looseyloo, I thought we were here to meet someone special? I'm not moving on, in fact, most times I'm here I am sitting still.
I'm just searching for my last date.......................My Jennie

First, I look at the picture. I mean, men are visual creatures primarily. Then, the location. And, location just as a reference point, like, Oh I've been there or the like. Not as a disqualifier for a potential match or friend. Finally, the description of the person. If anything piques my interest then I will go over their profile with a comb of a finer toothed nature.

I look for a smile in the photo. I look at the eyes.
I look for substance in the profile, and especially enjoy humor and a genuine sense of 'self awareness'.
I look at distance (to see if I need to drive or fly).
Other than that, every thing else is extra credit!

Location and religon. I still like the pics but I also am always interested in the profiles. I love people and have some older kids w/ some med. problems so I always need to know if a person has a positive outlook.

Thank you looseyloo,
I agree with your comment about children but should some reference be made to that in the lady's profile....for instance....
Even though I have not had children of my own, I am very fond of children, have nieces/nephews over whom I dote and would be comfortable with children of any future partner
I say this because on some personals sites, part of the criteria for a partner actually asks if one gender or the other is looking for a partner with children. This equally applies for both male & female and unless this is included in a profile, how does anyone know.
One of the first things someone may look for on a profile is if a future partner is comfortable with children......if it is not included in the criteria or the bulk of the profile....someone may miss out on their future partner.
Please don't think I was having a go at you specifically, I was just highlighting what I look for in a profile....that is just my opinion....and yes I have sometimes been caught up with cliches, it is not easy writing a profile.
