I have never been quite good at articulating why conservatives today scare me to death but this article explains it in a way I never could and answer questions I have had about conservatism that were never answered. I was going to post this in Current Events but thought better of it because the crowd over there would have stomped it using the very tactics described in this article. I'd very much like to hear what others think of it. Be warned it's a bit lengthy but I think a good read. Certainly explains the insanity that I am seeing on the right today that I wasn't able to quite get until i read this. I'm still not finish reading it myself, must sleep and read the rest tomorrow. The beliefs (the boundaries of their mental reality) are antithetical to each other. For example, a conservative may feel that natural moral order can't change, whereas a progressive may assert natural moral order grows but may have some growing pains. A conservative would see change as a step towards the inevitable destruction of what they cherish; a progressive would recognize change is inevitable and creative/creation. conservatism as a tool is really neo-fascism in disguise, and it is a complicated form of oppression. kind of hard to make oppression taste good. But it's not hard when you promote assertions that are confused with reality because they resonate with strongly felt values. Even when the correlation between the two is fantasy.

They want no social programs, no medicare, no medicaid and no social security. This country is being run by a government who works hand in hand with corporations. In case you don't know it that is the definition of FACISM. If you know anything about Germany in the 1930's you will see a parallel in the rise of violence against liberals and reporters by so called Republicans and TeaBaggers. Liberals are the new JEWS in this country. Wake up and vote next week. Don't sit home and be apathetic and disappointed. We must stop these people who call themselves conservatives. We liberals sit by with our mouths shut and don't vote. You are only hurting yourself and this country. Do we want a majority of the party that say no compromise, filibusters everything and votes no on everything. Please vote next week. I for one want MY country back and thought I had when Obama was elected. Wrong. So let's do something about it on TUESDAY. Do You really want a Governor who sold his company and shipped all the jobs to China I for one don't. Yeah he will create jobs all right then ship them overseas. WAKE UP and yell back.

I've been chomping at the bit to vote. I am so sick to death of the constant barage of anger at liberals. When the hell did liberals become a target for such hatred? I think liberals are naturally more layed back then the more extreme on the right, they just don't get rabid about everything. While the Right is getting so rabid that the whole country feels their anger. And I think that anger is getting liberals off their asses to vote. At least I hope so if they don't want to see Republicans take us back several decades. I voted the first day I was allowed to. I personally don't think yelling helps while being yelled at.. lol. However speaking up to someone who is so angry they can't speak with out hatred is difficult if not impossible so voting is the only way to deal with it. Hope that made sense it's past my bed time.

It's not that they are apathetic, you can't be with all the anxiety in the air. The media has no clue how liberals are going to respond any more than I do but if my anxiety is any indication I bet they come out and vote.

Yes, conservatives are very scary today. As to liberal vs progressive, this is the way I heard it (and the way I see it.) Liberal and Progressive mean essentially the same thing, but the connotation is different. The word liberal implies excess to some. "He liberally applied ketchup to his burger." Whereas the word "progressive" implies moving forward in a good direction. Progressives are liberals because they want to see our nation and our society grow and move forward healthily. However, not all liberal ideas are progressive.

Conservatives long for the good old days, even if they weren't so "good." In their world view, the old ways are the best ways. It is my belief we have to constantly look to the future to improve and grow. Progressives move us forward by challenging the staus quo and questioning the old ways. Conservatives symbolize for me this sentiment: I've got mine, now get your own. And I'll make it difficult for you to get anything because I like being better than you for having what I have and you don't! They are greedy bastards in my opinion.

Sure, a lot of Romans in the Republic were happy, but don't tell that to the poor and the slaves who didn't get to contribute to the history books as much, if at all. Eventually one "Republican" declared himself the High Priest of Rome (Gaius Julius Caesar, Pontifcus Maximus,) and then they had Emperors with god complexes forever after until its fall. Sounds familiar.

She was targeted by Ms. Palin for her support for the health care plan. Some nut case listened to her and her ilk (Glen Beck, etc.) and hurt a great many people. The right wing folks out there have been getting more threatening in their vitrolic attacks and I have even seen some of it here on dh ( which is so sad to me - especially when I hear it from some that I thought more reasonable ). I am inspired by the anger from these heartless people to voice my support for social programs, fairness for all others, and health care for people who have none! Maybe we have been too quiet or too divided to make our voices heard. It is time now to be brave and stand up to those bullies.

mischiefmanaged Bellevue, WA 47, joined Jul. 2010	well, they're about half the population. It's not really politics. It's Personality Conflict. Parts of our personalities are practically hardwired. Some things can change. Pessimists can learn to be optimistic. But other things are much harder to change. Maybe impossible. Overall, conservatives and progressives are divided by personality type- and the differences are huge. They feel threatened when things aren't done their way. Part of the having our voices heard is fear. Fear is a natural state and tool for conservatives. That's one reason why they often overreact with hate and anger. Anyhow, they're great at using fear too. And when progressives are only half the population, it only takes a small segment of us reacting in fear too, to swing to the dark side. A great point was made earlier this week. The he-who-must-not-be-named administration relaxed oversight over oil extraction. Of course we had an unprecedented oil catastrophe. BTW BP is blaming the govt for that. Anyhow, the previous conservative administration relaxed oversight. well, why would they do that? conservatives don't like govt getting bigger (having to watch over corporations) And also doesn't like govt interference in the market (watching over corporations). Current administration says oversight is simply proper management of land and resources that we, Americans, collectively own and also have to live with (if anything happens, say like a catastrophic oil spill). Two very different perspectives of the same thing, each having a huge impact on the world. I've mentioned this before- humans confuse beliefs for reality. It's a gift and a curse.
