I ask that question because I believe that people have associated the word liberal to be a person that is lockstep with the Democrats on most issues. However, most people forget what the word liberal really means, so I took this time to (first) ask what (from the following set of definitions) do you consider to be liberal?

–adjective
1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

2. ( often initial capital letter ) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.

3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism.

4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.

6. of or pertaining to representational forms of government rather than aristocracies and monarchies.

7. free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.

8. open-minded or tolerant, especially free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.

9. characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.

10. given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.

11. not strict or rigorous; free; not literal: a liberal interpretation of a rule.

12. of, pertaining to, or based on the liberal arts.

13. of, pertaining to, or befitting a freeman.

–noun
14. a person of liberal principles or views, especially in politics or religion.

15.( often initial capital letter ) a member of a liberal party in politics, especially of the Liberal party in Great Britain.

After reading this list of definitions, what type of liberal do you consider yourself to be? Does #7 fit you? How about #12? Choose whichever applies to you.

And for the record, I have stated in other threads that I'm a simple and plain liberal. Therefore, I'd consider myself #8. What about you?

I don't know. I favor just energy redistribution to the benefit of mankind. we should be working towards greater things. I don't support a system of individuals competing against each other. It doesn't solve our problems, and it grows with greed and selfishness and compounds problems. but I'm not a marxist either, communism sucks. So I don't really know what the answer is.

I consider myself a progressive, and I reject the label liberal....but I consider myself a New Deal Democrat as in FDR.

Wow! There are liberals and progressives in the dating realm? Oh wait, I need to remember this is the internet not necessarily representative of the majority of people in my region.

I also prefer the term progressive. To me to be a progressive means to thoughtfully and compassionately want to move forwards to the benefits of everyone, and that place which where we find ourselves. ie our environment. To me it means desiring a better life for all of us, and a willingness to actively help those who need assistance in achieving it. It also means considering alternatives to the way we've always done things when it comes to how we use energy, acquire resources, and look at leaving our communities once we are dead.

It also means, at least to me, that one must be respectful while trying to accomplish all those seeming impossibilities.

I likely qualify for most of the definitions of the word, cept for #9. My income PD (post divorce) is 2/3s of what it used to be. Don't have money, still try to be generous.

I am very liberal however with foreign policy I consider myself to be a libertarian. As far as the US goes I am damn near a socialist I am so liberal, I kinda lean towards the Thom Hartman/Bernie Sanders type of socialist democratic ideals. I think that our country has been taken over by giant multinational corporations that have destroyed the economy and fabric of this country. The middle class is what made this country what it is and with the right wing theocracy has done is to systematically punish the middle class for working hard and reward the wealthiest americans with lower taxes, tax loopholes and more while the rest of the country suffers through a veritable depression now top executives are making something like 400x the average worker. Meanwhile while this is happening you have the retards on fox news blaming unions for high prices and for lack of American productivity and the reason for outsourcing.

ok, I better stop before I continue ranting.

i'm a progressive democrat. i believe the government has an obligation to help those who can't help themselves. i.e. low income children, the low income elderly, the mentally challenged and the disabled. those who want to better themselves. i.e. low income youth who want to go to college who have decent grades. i believe in job retraining for displaced workers. limited assistance to young unwed mothers. ... they have to get a g.e.d. or better. go to college, trade school or go to work. not to have anymore children while getting government assistance. i believe healthcare is a human and civil right, not just for the healthy and wealthy. i also believe in second and third chances, but in the end everyone is responible for their own behavior and lives.

I consider myself more of a cafeteria democrat. I pick n' choose a lot but my core is pure democrat.

I'm probably more aligned with the Republicans of Pre-Eisenhower (although including him as well) which is what current Democrats are.

I would have been at home as a New Deal Democrat
Although, anti Korean and Vietnam wars, and all those since.
We should have had a full employment budget instead of Maximum employment after World War 2. so in that regard I'd be considered more of a Democratic Socialist, I guess

You are right, for me I consider myself a progressive, moderate, blue dog....
I think that the Republican Party have gone over the edge...with their way of thinking,,,since the Tea Party movement., for me I would consider myself more of the 99% movement..... From Romney, to Newt...whoever the Repo party of No chooses, I am pretty sure my Baraka will win in a landslide 4 more years in 2012.....

But I think most of the other partys Independent, Republians, or Liberterians cconsider us Democrats like uneduated, on welfare, or lazy,,,,sterotyping others beause of their political views, race or religions, assumintions....But I do believe as a Moderate that each of us should be able to look out for ourselfs and families, not the Goverment, ie....welfare, if you can not afford to have 4 kids because you are on welfare, why have another one...,,,,..,,,,, some people use the welfare system as a way of life, and that is not what it was meant to be...an emergency resource only.... When I go to the grocery store and see this mom next to her man, she is paying with food stamps, 4 kids beside them, and the man just pays what the goverment doesn't cover...that really pisses me off.... I wish I could be able to stay at home and eat Bom-Boms and sit in my Arse watching soaps all day long too, but gratefully to my late father he instilled in me independence from the goverment and any man....

thanks for posting that question, because I am so liberal some of my family and some friends think I am a socialist or communist. So I tell them if being for health care for all Americans, who cannot afford it even if they work ; if being for social security, medicare, medicade, workmen's comp laws, being for privacy rights, being for child labor laws, being for coal miners rights (black lung, etc) being in support of the right to organize and collective bargaining, being compassionate and tolerant towards others, then if all that is communism or socialist, then I am that. BUt for conversation here between us thinking Americans known as Liberals, I could be described as numbers: 4,5,7,8, 14. I agree with an earlier comment that I am a Libertarian when it comes to our foreign wars, getting into them so fast. However, I do not subscribe to Rep. Paul's views completely on foreign affairs. I am a "regular" party DEMOCRAT, also a precinct committeeman here in the BLUE state of Illinois, downstate. so I tow pretty much the party line on issues. I am in full support of the President and am enjoying the bloodbath the republiclowns are currently providing. It is refreshing to see t hem tear each other apart as they were enjoying Hillary and Barack go at it in 08. Well enough for now...

I'm a fighter, a liberal "liberator."

I like to take on the bullies and beat their asses.

But I like even better to win people over with a succinct, sound argument.

Right now I'm one part realist, one part idealist, and one part visionary.

I call myself a Wellstone/Kucinich Liberal from the Amy Goodman wing of the party. Were still here and voting against Republicans but feel the party should be more to the left on a host of issues.
Labor, foreign policy, air and water remissions, how the tarp was used, stimulus , etc etc. Haven't been too excited with how this Moderate Democrat has performed on some of these issues.
Of course a Democratic Moderate is better than a Republican so those on the far left have few alternatives but to vote against the even worse choice from the other side of the aisle.

True.

Freedom regarding our votes is limited to whom were were allowed to vote for.

We need to focus on the numbers of people behind those wasted votes.

There is nothing that says we can't organize, somehow.

There is nothing evil in that.

Am a social liberal (and prefer 'liberal' to 'progressive' heh.) As per an old Bloom County comic, "You want to know what I believe? (Being questioned before a Senate Un-American type Commitee) Long walks on the beach, real butter on popcorn, sad songs at night, total surrender to the communists (an 80s political satire comic series) and if that makes me a liberal than so be it!" Ok, maybe I'm not THAT liberal.

ditto, great description. I put on like that some time ago, but do not think it got posted....I think we need to start taking care of our people, jobs, health care, roads, environment, before handouts go to other nations...We have foreign committments, but need to scale back..I for one have no problem with the President and will whole heartedly support him , I am a downstate Illinois Democrat committeeman, a liberal/progressive and sick and tired of the whiney, racist members of my own party who say he is dragging us down, well he did not drag us down with the landslide four yrs ago and many rode his coattails..I do not think he will have that big winning margin, but if we work we will retain the White house, Senate, and yes get the House back from the tea partiers because Boehner h as no clue how to deal with his little nut jobs ..Lets hope the Dems win those senate seats in Indiana, and other states that have nominated tea partiers over the establishment republicans. ie: Nevada, and delaware, in 2010...
