I'm interested in growing very fragrant, hardy roses. It is my understanding that Damask varieties are the best, but they're difficult to find. I looked at some sites recommending the "Autumn Damask" since it has a longer blooming season than other heritage roses, including other damasks. None of them seemed to have them in stock though. Amazon and mainstream sites were a complete wash in trying to find Damask or other heirloom varieties. Perhaps I'll have to start asking around at all the local nurseries and see what I can find out.
Anyone else grow Damask or other heritage roses? Did I use the right word (heirloom?) What special problems might they have? How do you find them for sale anywhere?
Edited to fix title. Mistyped heritage when I meant heirloom.

I love the old fashion good smelling roses. They are not easy to find. if you could find someone with a bush it would be possible to take a cutting and grow a bush from that

They are divine. I just got a small vial of damask rose oil, and I love it. I really want to grow the roses themselves. They're so pretty too. I think they're way too often overlooked by rose gardeners.
It used to be that if you asked at a local nursery, you'd be given leads in the community. Nowadays, if they can't order it from their catalogs they just say you have to look online. I miss having a community connection with gardening. Everyone wants the latest fashionable roses instead of the hardier old-world varieties, and everyone wants the genetically engineered strawberries and such. Well, not everyone, I don't.
I found a couple sites that normally carry them but who were out of stock. My local nursery told me that the site probably only ships them bareroot, so I'll have to wait until Autumn. I'll keep checking sites though. I'm looking for an immature bush that I can keep in a very large planter for a while (I'll use the size planter I use for my ficus trees.)
I'm gonna keep asking around at local nurseries too, and maybe one of them will actually have that hometown nursery feel. So far they haven't impressed me.
