This is my first year growing a strawberry plant and I'm not quite sure how it should be treated.
Any tips?
Thanks.

well to grow strawberrys you need nice good rich soil and you will need to make a thick bed of straw and you will need to keep the soil damp and it will need lots of sun.

Here in Ga, I think they are a hardy plant and easy to grow, but for me they do best in a rich 'sandy' soil so they don't stay wet. With our red clay, a bed has to be built.

I got some strawberry plants this year and have them together in a large planter. I have been getting lots of strawberries from them. They're far enough apart to all survive, but close enough together that there's not a lot of evaporation problems. They do love to be kept wet. Of course, I live in California, and everything grows very well here because of our climate. In fact, this variety says it produces only one crop a year in early summer, but I've got a full second crop growing that's bigger than the first was. I give them the same fertilizer my other plants get, which is an organic mixture of bat guano and fish emulsion I believe, and it's the kind you mix with the water. I fertilize about once a week during growing season, hardly at all otherwise. I've only had these strawberries for a few months, so I haven't taken them through a dormant season or a freeze yet.

Yes, full sunlight is essential to get the best, fullest, ripest berries. You'll love the full flavor and sweetness of a strawberry ripened on the plant, picked and eaten within a minute of picking!

I haven't put any straw down, but I suppose that makes sense for planting in the ground. I don't think my planter will need it.

FAIL..I think the weather had a lot to do with it.
Most of my veggies didn't do very well. Got my money's worth out of tomatoes though so that's good.

Strawberries don't do well the first year, take a couple years to get established.
The first year you should have been pinching all of the runners so that the plants could establish heavy primary root system; you can let them spread in the second year if they are healthy.

This is my first year in attempting to grow strawberries..only started with a few plants and I have been like a mother hen over her young..lol

Big lush plants with loads of berries, just starting to ripen with a few medium size berries a bright red.

I came home from work yesterday with the excitement of seeing my berries, maybe even picking a nice big red strawberry...to my surprise, the birds had pecked and eaten all the ripe ones!!!!

Can someone help?...what should I do to rid my berries of birds???

I see some good advice here, and some, maybe not so good.

I have growing for......I think this is my 10th yr.

Everything depends on the TYPE of plant, your SOIL, your WEATHER, and willing to do trial and error.

Way up here, my plants (June baring) like the sun, combo of rich soil w/sandy soil. The more water they get, the less they do, so timing of water has to be figured out. Water in the early am or at dust, never in direct sun.

I choose to use mircle grow thru hose, once a week. June baring have big time runners, so the choir is never ending until fall to keep them in line. Alot of times I just push the runner back in the row to make them reproduce a more thicker row.

OR, snip the runners and either sell them or just give them away. The runners, most, have their own root sytems, so they can be planted right back in the ground w/o doing the water starting roots.

The straw, in my case was needed just for a weed block, appx 6-8" in between rows, works great. 1st yr you might hay the straw seeds start up, but they are easy pullin and once they are gone, it's clear sailing.

There are 2 things that can distory my corp real quick, ants and Robins.
If your going to use a commical to rid the ants, read the WHOLE labels, watch out for toxic warning, even though they advertise on the FRONT label, non toxic to animals of humans, the real warning in on the back in tiny words.

If your soil is kind of nasty, throw some lime(garden crystals)down 1st. It sweetens the soil.

I have an area 32' by 18' 20 rows, each season I haverst appx. 10-15 qts, not counting the ones I eat right from the garden.

Nothing better then walking out in the patch and smelling, then eatting a fresh grown strawberry 1st thing in the am. they never seem to make it to the ceral bowl.

Happen growing,

BTW, seek out bird netting on the net, they have nets that you can put over your plants, (any size) also think about putting some kind of moveable nosiy object near them, like foil pie pans.

I cut down a tree in the front yard close to the house and hollowed out the stump. Filled it with dirt and planted 4 strawbwrry plants. I think I got mabe 6 strawberries the first year ( birds beat me to them).lol The seed the birds left brought forth new plants. I put an old window screen over them and I beat the birds now.lol

Oh, I thought I lost all the plants because of a hard freeze last year, but they came back this year bigger and better. I love strawberries.

Sometimes its the plant. I tried one year with roots you buy at Lowes & had no luck. Then I got a could of small plants &hummingbird did good last year but didn't come back. This year I got 5 small plants &hummingbird they are thieving. They have shot out a ton of secondary branches that will start new plants. I water my plants about every other day. Also make sure to pull off red strawberries or it seems to take away from plant if you let them stay on to long.

if your ground freezes hard during winter you will need to put a good layer of straw, leaves, or some other mulch to protect the crowns (part above ground)from freezing. i use all the leaves that are raked from the yard to cover mine each winter. it is best to not divide the plants the first 2-3 years they are in the ground, the more established the plants are the larger both in size and quantity you'll get. also snip off any "runners" from plants before they start establishing roots otherwise the plants energy will go to root production for the runners instead of berry production. hope this helps
