Quote from fallingangel143:
I was raised Jewish and Catholic. My family follows both religions. I did all the religious things as a child because the family wanted it. Personal things happened to me as a child and I never truly stopped believing in God ... I sorta gave up on the whole idea of believing in anything or anyone. As I got older I stopped believing in organized religion or the notion of God being a savior that heals all pain.

Hi neighbor! Yea I never really understood the saying "God has a purpose for you and this is why such and such happened to you" as an explanation for every good or bad thing that takes place in one's life. It just doesn't make sense. For me it took while to completely understand and come to terms about God being just fantasy. I have been reading a lot of what has been posted in these threads and it all is very interesting.

Does it mean you were a non-believer in the closet or that you discovered religion is a myth after you left home?

There is no such thing as "god"... I was told that we should worship "god" but I will worship no-one but myself. I have never believed in "god" but I do believe in aliens. I might be crazy but I think they're out there. We weren't created by "god"... We are alien rejects. Science and Aliens FTW!!! That's just my theory...

I never really believed any a that crap. Not even when I was a kid. I may be no rocket scientist, but I'm smart enough to know it's the greatest bullshit story ever told. I could go on & on about this, but I can't stand long-ass posts either.

Quote from mason1327:
god has a plan for us all ive been told, and as well as many of you have already discussed. ok destiny fate whatever. i just don't see it. what really stopped me from beliving in god was that idea of punishment for sins, and when no lightning bolt fell from the sky to correct them its because god is all forgiving. WTF kinda logic is that? If god exists than when he created me and my plan he decided he'd just go wild and have a laugh I've had the worst luck from flipping a car 4 times to falling 20 feet I've broken more bones than i can remeber but if its gods plan and hes sending me to hell for not bowing down and thanking him for my pain and mysery at least I'll have a few friendly faces to greet me there. : P

love that explanation! thank u! also the fact that "everything happens for a reason, god wanted him/her up there for a reason" bull shit! give a little kid cancer, making them suffer is for a reason?! now upon reading this i would have to say i don't believe in a god of any sort...all of it is bs...if others want to believe go ahead, no judgement...i dont

I was raised with with the latin american belief of the child jesus (Niño Dios) that brings gifts for all good children on cristmas eve. I also heard a lot about Santa Claus. These traditions were at odds and confused me a lot.

I came up with the idea that Santa Claus was a contractor for el Niño Dios. Then, I learned that both were fake. So, it occurred to me that if my parents lied about Santa Claus and el Niño Dios, the church could be lying too. Later, I noticed the huge discrepancy between the history of the earth versus the time frame given by the Bible. I couldn't find a connection between the bible and dinosaurs. By the time I was in 4th grade, I no longer believed in praying to a God. I had completely 'seen the light' by my 14th birthday.

Did you dad believe prayer meant that he had God locked into a contract? Some immature believers think that way, but that view has more to do with immaturity & less with belief.

Yes christianity is money business. The #1 consistant selling book is the joly bible. And christians are so wound up when they see or hear the number 666 , but if they do the math on the words " THE HOLY BIBLE" they will discover by pure math it is the number 666. My new found non belief happened two months ago but i finally professed it to myself. At first i was scared to.ghe more i prayed the more truth revealed.

For me it was during the 2004 election that I stopped calling myself a Christian.

You remember how Bush was wrapping himself around religion and using religion to justify hatred & mistreatment of gays and others in order to motivate the religious right to vote for him? Well that kind of rhetoric really disgusted me, and got me thinking that if this is how all the ultra religious Christians think then I didn't want to associate myself with them anymore.

Then I started to think some more, and realized that I basically was an agnostic/atheist my whole life. I never prayed, I just went to church because my parents made me, and I never really had much of a belief in god anyway.

Even when there is a glimpse of me believing in such a Gawd ... things like this make me realize why I don't believe in Gawd or in religion. Today I found at a 22 year old and her unborn child died in a car accident. How could one believe when things like this happen to good people. I don't understand really.

I was raised catholic..when I would question certain things the answer was always you just have to have faith. I never quite accepted that answer. I came to consider myself more spiritual than religous for a time but after my mom died of lung cancer at the age of 64 (Oct. 13th, 2006) and when I went to the priest of her church to get some financial help for her funeral, I was told they didn't do anything like that. She spent her time and money on them for years...not to mention that they needed to collect a cool $3 million to build a new church that looked 'catholic inside and out'...whatever the f**k that means (and I will add they did eventually build it but it sat empty for a few years because the diocese couldn't agree on how it should look on the inside, which cost another $3million).

I am convinced that somewhere in the Bible and in any other of those booklet these people use...there is a chapter in "how to become a SOB"...a requirement to be a clergyman.

For this reason...

Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.
...
8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

2 - You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

In my Sophomore year in high school. Up to that point I was a Christian. Never missed services on Sunday...somewhat active in church doings. In my Sophomore year I wrote a thesis non the possibility of life on other planets outside of our solar system. My minister got word of this and on the next Sunday I was ordered into the ministers office whereupon I was called a sinner. My minister ordered me to get down on my knees and beg God for forgiveness. I told him I'd do nothing of the sort and walked out of his office and away from Christianity. Some years later I met a woman who was a practicing Witch and a Pagan. She got me in touch with Paganism. Been there ever since.
