I saw on the traval channel and PBS there are train rides through the rocky mountians, another through alaska, and one closer to home into the adirondack. I like train rides too. Travel agencies can help you best.

Empire Builder, Chicago to Seattle, with a stop in Glacier and some time in Seatle at the end of the trip is nice.

Trans Canadian, a bit expensive but probably better scenery than the empire builder, Toronto to Vancouver.

Agawa Canyon tour train and Snow train by the Algona railway.
This one some family in Michigan have enjoyed, it will take you into some pristine Canadian wilderness I believe. Also they may have that Snow train where you can view Polar Bears if you want to sight something unique.
My mother loved it.
Google for more details I guess.
I know my friends and family accessed this at Sault St. Marie Mi. But there's probably a connecting route thru Ontario for Northern NYer's as well

I used to trek to Chicago occasionally when my sis was in college. The funnest trip I took was out to Cooperstown H.O.F. I also remember seeing Hersheys and Gettysburg but I'm forgetting which parts were by rail and which were car. I do remember going thru the adirondaks and the Hall of fame being the rail portion for sure.
I enjoyed my train trips . Good idea Duchessa, hopefully one day soon I will get to go on a nice western excursion as well. There is rail that goes to a hotel right on one of the grand canyon rims as well

I've taken the train from MN to visit family in CA...its wonderful...if you don't want to spend money on a sleeper car just know that the coach seats fully recline...I reccommend packing some of your own food to save some money and take advantage of the viewing car a lot have chess and card game tables for passengers to enjoy.

Thanks...I want a sleeper...
