I carried the "pig" and hauled 500/600 rounds myself. If I had them across me I generally had them down. Had them across the top of my ruck. two other squads helped carry the '60 rounds. My basic load in Dakto was 1500 up. Normal was 1100.

Those M-60 belted rounds were going to poke you no matter how you carried them. Personally, I didn't care for the idea of carrying a bunch of shiny stuff on me. It makes you a target.

You guys should arrange a get-together and meet and greet to rehash your VietNam years. ... You all have so much in common, and so much that wasn't common, that you all could share with each other. You are all so funny and knowledgeable I bet you would be awesome in a gathering.

i was active in the vhpa, vietnam helicopter piolts association, for a number of years. finally attended a convention in las vegas and found that other than we all flew swing wings in country i had very little if anything in common with my 'winged brothers.' funny how you think you build lifetime relationships with buddies in combat but get into the real world we're all just regular folks with greatly different ideas about life. for some vietnam and the military were the high point in their life. most of us move on.

I had been to the VFW many times with my husband, Bones, and have heard the guys jockeying for position in telling their war stories. They invaribly started their pick-up lines with (following the story of the last speaker) with "No shit! There I was... or ... There we were..." and then going into their own rememberance of their military escapades. ... One thing I can say with authority, as a civilian spouse of a vet, is that it was a joy to see the comraderie between all these guys from varying branches of the service recounting their experiences. I have witnessed the brotherhood, love, and respect for each other. Some of them may have been azzholes in their personal lives but within a group of "brothers" they were awesomme to be around and observe. ... The humor and wit of these veterans is heartwarming. ...... I feel priviledged that I was permitted to be a part of their lives. ............... Following my husband's death I was not excluded from the "sisterhood" of the "brotherhood". Rather I was taken under the wings of some of our country's finest -- veteraans -- and supported and strengthened through some of the darkest days of my life. ---- God Bless All of America's Veterans and our serving military forces.

gdaddy. I dont think many Americans now try to understand how small Vietnam actually was in relationship to our forces there. In ways it was probably a bit like Afghanistan in that the mountains in the Highlands and those along the border really gave the NVA and VC and advantage simply because our folks got dropped in there and had to learn how to fight them in that terrain, tempature and weather. Where you was, Kontum Province was one kind of miserable fighting, the Delta was another and we were applying WWII tactics to a guerilla force.
I think the 173rd and 1st Cav all fought in the same neighborhood as you 4th Inf. Ivy guys did. Same for us, it was 101st, 1st Cav and Marines together. But what Im trying to say is the soldiers would go out and take some ground, pay for it in blood and we would move on out. Then we would be sent to do it again. I think Afghanistan is a lot like that now. WE would put some kind of base down and protect it, but the gooks would control everything around it.Sound familiar?

Thanks Gdaddy, I always feel a sense of comfort when you all are here.
It doesn't quite feel right when Skysoldier isn't here. His presence was very powerful.
I always felt if Skysoldier says it is, it IS.
Gdaddy, there is always going to be someone who doesn't like someone else for many reasons. Maybe he met a really obnoxious guy that also happened to be a Vietnam Veteran. Then he assumes all Vietnam Veterans are obnoxious instead of realizing it has nothing to do with it.

Sorry to say some people are just ignorant, or selfish, or my guess a tad jealous. Many of them have squandered away their benifits or never earned any, probably in the case of the hateful witch who shot her mouth off to you OP probably ran her son's/man( maybe even a vet) off, and they can't stand the fact that Veteran's came back and by majority did well. Not saying that all did. Which is a national disgrace no more than was given to help; because few of the hundereds of Vets I have worked with didn't at least do ok with a minimum of respect and how to's. But. I think, a lot of it is straight up shame. They know deep down they let someone else "carry their water" and it gauls them so they stick to their lame ideas rather than admidt the truths.
I know it is hard because I still have to call out some idiot now and then but I feel if we stick together it doesn't matter if they spit on us then or now we still know what is right.

Ya know gdaddy we will never let it go.It will always be with us and sometimes it will haunt our sleep and when we go it will end for us. Not sooner. But I really dont understand the ones who attacked or blamed GIs verbally or in any other way back then or anytime since (if and when they did). I have a hard time grasping how it was as traumatic or tragic for somebody who never was there and didnt personally experience Vietnam or how they can connect its horror and waste to the average serviceman or women and put the blame there, many of them drafted themselves and there not of their own doing and just fighting to survive.
The closest thing and something I do "get" is the suffering and loss of family etc. who had a member killed, disfigured or maimed. But of all of those kind of folks I ever met, and they are numerous, I have never met a single one who ever showed any anger or blame at soldiers. Not a one.

Heres a war story daddy.I enlisted.I went to Ft. Kknox for basic, Ft.Sam for AIT and Ft.Benning for jump school. Then Vietnam.
When I came back I wasnt short enough for a "drop" right away so they put me at Ireland Army Hosp. at Ft. Knox.I was changing dressings etc and doing pretty mundane stuff. They had civilains and mostly persons who had not been to Nam yet there except for some docs and nurses (RNs).Very seldom was a actual comabat medic on the ward
So I get to know this Green Beret from Michigan named Roger. He knew I had been 101st.He had done 3 or 4 tours in Vietnam.Anyway he had one leg amputated below the knee, and the other foot gone.He had serious medical problems and a couple fingers gone also.
He liked me.So he asked me to get him a bottle. Now thats something ya cant do.I did it anyway. So whut?
He was on lots of meds, but I couldnt say no to him.So I would sneak him a 1/2 pint of Ancient Age in during my shift. He loved me for it!
Of course we got caught.
So I got reassigned to drive a van from recruiting stations in Louisville to Nichols Army Hospital which was the induction center picking up draftees and enlistees.I told the CO to bust me, I didnt really care.He said no.He said "I might have been tempted to do it myself"....
I heard later that Roger committed suicide in Grand Rapids.

I feel privileged to have had so many Vietnam Vets in my past.
My father was Vietnam Vet(2 tours) along with several other family members.
Almost all of my Drill Instructors were Vietnam Vets when I entered into service back in 1987. My commanding unit NCOs from my 1st Sergeant and up were Vietnam Vets.
Their experienced guidance during my training and service probably saved mine and my cohorts butts in more ways than 1.
My thanks to all that served before me in the hard wars when men were truly hardcore men even though it was forced upon them and never fully honored the way they should have been.
My apologies and prayers to the 1s that never made it back physically or other.

My uncles served in Nam, while my father was not allowed to due to medical reasons. He always wished he could have done something to help the men, especially having seen what happened to my uncles upon return. While he could not serve, he did however find that way to help, having gone back to school and going to work for the civilian military as he called it. He brought my sister and me up with a tremendous respect for any person who serves. Between my father, my uncles, and having been a miltiary wife, I say thank you and to hell with anyone who has something negavtive to say about other who serve. Any vet gives not just some of himself, but all, and many end up losing more than they expect during service. I have nothing but respect for those serving in any war and so does my daughter who has been brought up to literally walk up to any man/woman in uniform and say thank you because without them, others would not be able to b*tch about a war that took lives and gave no thanks.

Big time, Gdaddy!
It started in my school where one or two refused to stand up.
I don't think they did it to prove a point, it was to get a reaction from the teachers and others. They had no knowledge of what an insult or how stupid their behavior was. I was more of a smile and a you can't make me.
Cup, it was not meant as a reflection on one branch but it was meant to show others the sacrifice our soldiers are making. People tend to group soldiers and not see them as unique individuals. To focus on this one soldier and to see his face, really drives the message home.

I haven't had much luck trying to find information on Skysoldier, either.
I don't know if there is anyone on here that he stays in contact with.
Should I post a thread in hopes that someone would respond?

I can believe it. Because there are dirtbags who feel it's their right, duty and obligation to piss on us Astan and Iraq vets.
Some chick I was talking to on here cussed me out and called me a baby killer when she found out I went to Afghanistan. Really? Baby killer? It's 2012, can't these retards come up with something original?

Anger management brother? Step away and take a few deep breaths. If most Vietnam Vets (Im one) had a chance to do it again Im sure most of us would go again. But the hard fact we live with is everyday for all our sacrifice and service history will continue to be written that doesnt favor our involvement there. Truth is, many vets came home to protest the war themselves (but not the warriors). I didnt, but I knew it sucked. Things look different to those who havent "been there". When they act their opinions out on us its absolutely fair to put them in their place (physically if need be). But as much as we dislike it we serve(d) to protect the right of dissent. Its very American.
