1) Squat - Definitely the most challenging and beneficial lift you can do for the whole body. I am a bit of a masochist when it comes to my own workouts, so naturally I enjoy the hardest one the most. Nothing like a heavy, deep squat.

2) Deadlift - Second only to the squat. Hits every muscle group and is extremely taxing. After three sets of 3-5 reps on heavy deadlifts, I am always feeling exhausted.

3) Pull-Ups - I am a big guy (250 lbs) so pull-ups are challenging for me. One thing I was proud of was to hit 10 reps with my own body weight. Not bad considering how much I weigh. One of my pet peeves is seeing 130-150lb guys thinking they are bad a** by banging out pull-ups all day long. It is much easier when you are at an extremely light body weight.

** I used to love bench press when I was younger. Now I find it to be the most boring of all the lifts.

Am finding the free squat guess you call it that ? Is actually less stressful on my hip joints and knees then the sled . And seriously cant feel the burn on any mechanically assisted leg exercise .

Like I do the squat !

Thank ya sir but the front squat is a beast basically like the back squat but the bar is balanced between the front side of your shoulders and ya go ads to the grass on these which makes it exciting . I personally go heavy as shit on regular squats then do some ham curls come back and do these I personally believe they were created by Satan.

A good article on them is http://stronglifts.com/how-to-front-squat-with-proper-technique/

Ha Ha.. Gotta say I told you so on this. Remember back when you were telling me that squatting deep was going to kill your knees/back/joints? Now you are finding that you feel better squatting deep, and you are getting way better results doing it. Heavy deep squats are the best exercise period.

I'm a little bit on the gimpy side . My major injuries being a broken back and shoulder. I spend a lot of time on the rowing machine ergo meter. And I do a lot of dips pull ups assisted and work up to my body weight. I'm cautious increasing weight to avoid set backs and downtime with injuries. There is nothing worse to me than not being able to train . I stay around 250 even with a lot of cardio. Coming from a boxing background fitness and sparring condition is important to me.

I like Zumba as well. Much more entertaining then just doing the weights or spending time on a bike or treadmill. Zumba is high energy non-stop moving for an hour. Awesome cardio and muscle work in one. I'd love to just do Zumba but that's only 2 days a week and I'm wanting some results. Joined a gym to get everything in.

Running on roads: back in 1987 I created my first road course of 4.7 miles. I ran it all summer. As the years went on I created more and more courses. In 1990 I created a 17 mile course to get in shape for a marathon I did that Fall. In the Fall of 1991 I ran the best 1/2 marathon of my running career and ran a 13.7 course weekly to shape myself for that. This morning I ran a 4.8 course I created in the 1990s.

I never kept track of my bench when I was working out in college. But it is my favorite right now. My goal is to get to 2 forty-five plates on each side. Right now, I'm at 40 lbs, it will be a long journey, but something to look forward to.

I have so much appreciation for the squat. Never squated with a barbell before, was always on the squat machine, and my quads, just body in general feels sore for two days. I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get in my cardio today, but I'll try. The sad part was I only could squat 15 lbs on each side, but on the machine I could squat 135. Squats has made it to number 1, with my favorite exercise, because of its challenge and difficulty. Can't wait for weight days...

Kept it uber light, 'till I got the form and technique down pat...Im still very much a n00b at them, but have gotten up to 130lbs between weights and bar total...

yeah, yeah, yeah,...I know its light...but everyone has to start somewhere..

Right on 74 and all the contributors in this thread, being a noob in the gym, I definitely can't let my ego get in the way. I hear u 74, I'm just trying to get my form down with squats. I make sure I go all the way down, keep my back straight and no tippy toeing... I've been using DH to get in shape actually. All the exercises you're all naming, I just go on YouTube, and watch demonstrations and form. And maaan, what a new world it has been with weights. I'm loving all of it, dumbbells, plate exercises, I'm just enthusiastic and wanna incorporate everything. I was always into calisthenics, and never gave weights a chance, my closemindedness.... Looking forward to u all posting, definitely a cool crowd on DH, I get lost on BB.com, so I've given up with that place for now. And BTW, Gamer, those military presses have my shoulders and posture on point... I didn't know what military presses were, but I was already doing it with dumbbells, the bar military press is on my list to try on my next weight day...just gotta make sure again, form form form...

Well in fitness there is what is called the all or none principal. This means a muscle either contracts or it doesn't. Take your abs for example. Your ab is like this rubber band that extends from your sternum down to your pubic symphysis. It either contracts or doesn't. The debate that arises is certain angles would give increased tension on a certain part of the muscle. Example it is popular belief if you do a ton of crunches your upper abs will grow or leg raises make your lower grow. The effect is pretty negligible at best, but over years of training it may become a little more pronounced. To answer your original question try wide grip lay pulldowns and do seated cable rows. On both exercises make sure to relax all the way and let the lats get a nice stretch and then get a good contraction. That's a great contraction. If you want to make it really brutal. Try slowing your tempo. That's called time under tension which is important for stimulus. You might have to drop 10 lbs or whatever, but your doing more overall work. Sometimes you take a step back to take two forward in this game.

For my favorite exercises it definitely has to big the big four:

Squats, deadlifts, pull ups, bench press. These big compound lifts, especially squats and deadlifts are the ones that cause your natural testosterone levels to spike. Testosterone levels are directly responsible for speed of progress and overall muscle size. They are the best two tools we have up our sleeves being natural

Thanx Trainer, I always do my reps slow, always make sure my form is right regardless of weight. Getting on those lat pulldowns and seated cable rows tonight. I have to say Squats are incredible, man. My second time doing it, and my whole body is beat to hell. My form is kind of iffy, so I'm doing Squats with dumbbells too. Anything just to max out my quads, ham, and calves...

Hrs,

I'd do pull-ups for your wings. It's easier to cheat with pulldowns. Plus you might want to do weighted pull-ups in the future, so doing them now will give you a head start. If you can't do them yet, do the assisted pull-up machine if your gym has one. If not, buy a cheap doorway pullup bar and put a chair under it, and starting from the top, do slow negatives til you build enough strength for regular pullups.

U were right about the lat pulldowns Jose. I didn't cheated, but the seat was too far from the cable. I learned a lot in my last workout. Less weight was better for me cause I can feel it all in my back. My whole body is still sore, taking off this Saturday. Oh, and Jose pull UPS were my main source of exercise ten years ago, my muscles aren't as strong as before, so I can only do about 3 or 4. I like the seated cable rows, I've never had my back feel like this besides when I was hitting 5 sets of pullups. Before I go, what are ur views on ab work? I haven't done any ab work for now cause I've read at multiple places you should just do cardio to blast the fat away first. I'm taking that and running with it, and I can see my two upper bricks right now. But just curious to anyone in the forums, how is it beneficial for me to do ab work if I got fat all over it?

Hrs,

Yeah, there's no need for direct ab work. Abs are actually a stabilizer muscle group. They stabilize your midsection to protect your lower back. So any big exercise that requires you to contract your abs hard is also a great ab exercise. These are exercises such as squats, stiff legged deadlifts, deadlifts, weighted hyperextensions, and the ab roller believe it or not, are all great ab-building exercises - no ab crunching exercises necessary. Seeing them, like you've learned, comes down to bodyfat level.

Flat barbell bench isn't that great of a lift. For a more challenging chest exercise try dumbbell incline, dumbbell decline, dunbbell flat. reverse grip, cable cross, flys. Any exercise that uses balance is better. Squat is the most important but I prefer Olympic lifts (clean and snatch) to any other !
