I will be going to Kyoto for about 6 weeks next summer. Does anyone have any ideas on any good clubs or places to go?

It would be nice to have someone to travel with. I'm actually going for my language courses for my BA.

I don't really know. If you google japanese street food images, there's lots of neat pictures. I saw tempura, takoyaki (sp?), "pastries", squid, noodles...It's all good. They have a few things that may be odd from an american perspective. In general though you can find plenty to eat if you are flexible with your diet. I think japan would be one of the asian countries with the least surprised in their food.
there's a trick you can do with chopsticks when eating noodles too! You squeeze a few noodles, then rotate the chopsticks while squeezing. It makes a little ball of noodles at the end of the sticks. Then you're not slurping a bunch and spraying your clothes with noodle sauce.

Alll kinds of street food, try the little puff balls with octopus or the skewers of different meat on a stick thats been smoked on a grill. You will find so much variety that you might not be able to sample them all.
Definitely try the Ramen noodles.

I have heard that it was really expensive. I was told for my stay would be close to 2000 for the train and the living expenses.

I was in Kyoto, Hiroshima and nearby places last time I visited Japan. It's better for you to stay in Student Hostel it is way cheaper compared to Commercial Hotel. It is nice if you know survival Japanese language because it was so difficult to converse with them in English. Don't forget to experience their cultural activities like Kimono wearing, green tea preparation, and ikebana/ oregami. Japanese honors their's and your's time. Don't miss the traditional bath! I enjoyed it a lot! Bring your camera because it is really beautiful. Try to visit their old castle (Hiroshima Castle), Narra Park and their temple. They will respect you for your talent and if you respect them. I know you will enjoy your stay there. Take care always.
