thats cool i used to use a similar combo when i was a kid your assumption is correct but i am talking about just plain ol veggies i mostly grow tomatoes, chiles, legumes, aromatic herbs etc. you should try a product called flora nova grow for the early veging and bloom for when fruiting begins its made by general hydroponics you wont believe the differance.

Sometimes using lime can be good ... but other times it can be bad. Do a soil sample for acidity levels before adding lime.

Thank you will do cheer was thinking about that it would be worth the few dollars for a PH tester I think do you know which one is decent? I've seen mixed rviews on the cheaper ones not real sure yet which one to get.

Take a soil sample to your local county extension office. Costs about $8 and will tell you exactly what to put out and when. The home pH kits may tell you the pH but they dont tell you what to do to correct the problem. Pretty much a waste of money.

Well, I tried worm compost.
It was a challenge to separate the scat from the wigglers and the egg saks but some had to be sacrificed!
Soaked it up in a 5 gallon pail for a day or so then poured it on all my plants - mostly tomatoes.
Well the tomatoes have shot up at least a foot and there are blooms everywhere. One even has what appears to be a double bloom.
Then the mud - for now - is put into my compost buckets so it can be put outside when we thaw up here.
My next batch of compost is being made now. From peat moss and shredded newspaper. They seem much happier now.
Happy gardening everyone!

I use 'Alaskan ' liquid fish emulsion diluted with water, put it on lightly but more frequently with a watering can.
IF YOUR TALKING ORGANIC GROWING....
When I put out plant sets in the spring or any time of year, like broccoli, tomato, peppers, cabbage, squash or what ever, etc. Like the long season growing heavy feeders.
I dig my hole and then put a 1/8 cup of Korean kelp granules and 1/8 cup powdered bone meal in the hole, then stir it around a little and set in the plant and water / sock well with a cup or more of diluted fish emulsion.
Later in about two weeks, add more fish water and throughout the growing season. I finally put on a side dressing of old horse manure or some of my compost, when the plants are starting to put on blossoms and starting into fruition, that's when they need that extra summer feeding the most, that they natural demand for good size and prolific production, you can do that twice or more as needed to stretch out you veggie / fruit production.
I also use some home made compost, one year old, made with, leaf, horse ( chicken if I can get it) grass cuttings, and the few kitchen scraps I have. ( other good things are, feather meal, old alfalfa hay or alfalfa pellet for rabbit feed, ground up leather scraps, rice hulls, almond hulls, cotton seed meal, apple pumas > left over from making /pressing apple cider. Fresh wheat straw, if kept out of the rain ( when it looks bright and shiny) a little applied as a mulch, contains and releases some potash to your plants.
*** Never use any thing relating to English walnuts or Black walnuts, BAD BAD !.
I also add some cuttings from a patch that's close to home source, of "Horse Tail " ( look it up) a wild plant that has lots of silica.( prehistoric plant / grass). Silica help your plants stand up strong and strait and can with stand the strong winds better.
If you can't get KELP granules. There is a product called " Maxy Crop " that is kelp in a concentrated form, looks like instant coffee crystals, that dilute fast in water.
Kelp contains lots of minerals, can also be applied ( diluted w/water) as a crop leaf spray, just as can be done w/ the fish. << both of those are also good to spray on your fruit trees in early spring time when leaf buds emerging / but for sure before any blossoms buds are showing swelling or emerging.
But also can be used after ALL blossoms have set fruit, it can be used again trow out the growing season. PS: it will be absorbed through the bark of the tree with a very early spring spraying, even with out any leaf showing, that will also help strengthen you fruit blossoms and during the cooler night too !
Happy growing my Friends ...

I have used fish emulsion, goose droppings, kelp meal, bone meal, and all sorts of amendments some years when I couldn't haul manure in but it seems that my best tasting tomatoes have been from the years when I've used horse manure...just saying.

10-10-10 if the plant doesnt bloom
6-12-12 or something with a higher number if it blooms or produces fruit.
For helping set veggie blossoms. There is an ORTHO Product, Called "Bloom Builder" it's water soluble.
Not sure of the NPK ( could be 0-10-0 ) - Cant remember right now.
Look for it at your 'ACE Hardware' store or at the local 'Garden Shops'
Basically: I Do almost all Organic Gardening ! Especially with Food Growing that I will eat !
No Chemicals Fertilizers or Chemical sprays. There are many natural things to use.

Some really good info here. I like using homemade compost now, and adding dolomitic lime here in Ga to correct ph and low magnesium levels.
A warning, couple years ago I built a new raised bed and bought some composted cow manure. The first year, potted tomato plants turned yellow and died. I planted again and these plants developed curled leaves and failed to grow. I tilled and added composted grass clippings, and the next year the plants started with curled leaves but got a few tomatoes. I had the soil tested and found long acting herbicide, must have been sprayed in the pasture the cows grazed. Just be careful. Check the internet for symptoms, maybe check the source of your compost.
I also use a lot of dried grass clippings for mulch around my plants to reduce weeds and hold moisture. They break down during the year and add to the soil. Here again, be aware of chemicals used on your lawn.

I am using a fertilizer from a guy in Auburn, MI. No matter what I put it on, fruit trees, corn, tomatoes, etc, I get a bumper crop. Stumbled on his web site and he told me of a 6 inch lime tree that grew 2.5 FEET in four months and had fruit. I said bs but after using the stuff, it worked.

tea allows nutrients to go straight to the roots, it adds beneficial bacteria and fungi, and when sprayed it acts as a natural pest repellant. i use it once a week in the place of water.
I think I've heard that it helps combat fungal diseases when sprayed on the plants too. I've never tried it.

Yes I'm sure that's very effective if you want to go to all that trouble but I think I'll be trying the seeping method take some compost and manure stuff it in a sack or whatever I find just let it leach into the water for about 3 days occasionally stirring. This is my first year so I'm no pro but I really like all I've read about the square foot gardening thing that what I'm doing in my raised beds and also my self watering containers I figure an 18 gallon tote is two squares and using jute twine to make my grids in my beds.

those buckets are fresh Bull cow chit. I do mean fresh, like running off the shove as I scoopped the poop up.. what you see is maube two months of sitting in the sun , butt cover with that trap to kept the rain off....
BUTT, on the right is maybe 15 yr old chicken. I put about half a bucket ( 5 gal) in that barrel, which is half a 55 gallon drum, so say 25 gals of water, wait at least two days.
Dig pockets around the plants with connecting channels, Then just fill those up with soup.
using half bucket ( 2 1/2 gals ) of chit I can refill the big barrel at least 4 x's before needing more chit...
I live in the country, but the city people have taken over , So chit is not easy to come by. So I ask a guy if I could just go out and fill up buckets. I got about 6 full one's,of BULL maybe 4 of chicken ... which will be more than enough for this yr, my garden is pretty big ...
FYI,, This is old school pot framing method. for the days of backpacking everything in..yep bags of shit ...ta grow the good shit
if your using a light bulb, there no reason to not have tomatoes all winter
