If you were planning to move across the country to live in South Dakota, what area of the state do you prefer? Are there any small towns near Wall or Chamberlain with housing opportunities? Is SD basically a pet friendly state when it comes to housing?

I look forward to chatting with you.

Besides the scenery an quaint little towns an history the hills are like a trash can with no lid. Chaimberlain is ok not much crime. But for money its sioux falls brookings or aberdeen. As far as pets. Put up a cage an u can raise a bear if u want. Id stay as far away from reservations as possible

I have been all over the Southern part of the State but not the Northern. I have travelled from Sioux Falls to Rapid City with stops all along the way. I really liked Spearfish, Wall, Chamberlain and lots of other places I visited.

There are strict laws here about the height of a fence you can put around your yard. I was wondering if I would run into the same situation. We are not allowed to put up a dog run in the yard.

As far as crime is concerned, I don't think anywhere in SD could match the crime here. My city has moved up to 20th in the country in crime ahead of big cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore. There are so many stabbings and shootings that it is not safe to go anywhere anymore.

My Lady came to Sioux Falls for a 2 week visit and fell in love with the city. She couldn't believe how "clean" downtown was and how laid back most people are here.

She'd been living in NJ and near Allentown, PA.

If your looking near Chamberlain or want to be near the Missouri River Mitchell and Yankton are pretty nice towns.

Thank you, SD. I love that area around Chamberlain but I like everywhere I have seen in the state. I have been to Mitchell but not Yankton. I will have to check it out.

Of the cities I visited Sioux Falls is the one where I wouldn't want to live. It is more commercial than most of the state. I want to go to a more remote area. I met very nice people in Rapid City but I want to live somewhere smaller than that. I was disappointed the last time I visited Hill City and found it to be more commercial than it used to be.
I am hoping the entire state doesn't change like that. It is so charming the way it is.

Your right, Sioux Falls isn't a "real city" compared to the shitholes called "Cities" on the coasts.

If we had our choice we'd be living somewhere like Castlewood or Redfield. Small, quiet, knowing everyone around you...

Just not many jobs in those areas.

I didn't think Sioux Falls was that bad but I am looking for something a little more remote. Fortunately, I don't have to work unless it is a few hours a week part time.
Everything out there is cleaner than here. I was amazed when I visited Denver at how clean it was. And the water in SD is so clear. Here we have dark brown filthy river water. I am surprised that any fish can live in it.

originally from Brandon, its quiet, but getting bigger. I would not call it a suburb of Sioux Falls, but a lot of people do. The cops in Brandon, are also Assholes, Thank God I don't live there anymore. I live in a old area of SF, well established a lot of older folks.
Life is what you make it where you stake it.

Custer, Hill City and like the other guy said anywhere in the Black Hills. If you want a small town feel I would pick Custer but if you like snow go for the northern hills like Lead. Custer doesn't get much for snow and the town is awesome. One of the best places to eat in the area is there. I have lived in San Diego, Denver and Minneapolis and this area is the best place I have been so far. You are correct as far as the whole state being nice I just prefer the weather here as well as the scenery. Any way you slice it SD is a animal friendly state, I just hope you are ok with hunters because 95% of the population hunts.

As long as they don't hunt my coyote looking dog.

Which place in Custer is the best place to eat?

There used to be a place in Lead that served the biggest burgers I ever saw anywhere. I don't know if it is still there.

I like Chamberlain, Wall, Kadoka, Spearfish, all of the cities of the Black Hills although I thought that Hill City had changed a lot the last time I was there.

I liked the food at Midnight Sun. Did I get that name right? in Deadwood.

Thanks for all of the info.

It all started with the movie Dances With Wolves. When I saw that movie, I wanted to see that scenery. I had never travelled anywhere. So I took a 9 day trip to South Dakota and that started my travelling. I have now been to half of the states but SD is my favorite. I love the scenery, the low crime rate, and most of all the climate. There is no humidity. Here the humidity is probably the worst in the country or close to it. I have been there five times. I have had a penpal there since 1991 and we actually got to meet in person on one of my trips.

There is so much to see and do there but it isn't building on top of building like here.

I love the clear water in Spearfish Canyon and the snow. I got stuck in the snow in the canyon one time and some people helped me out. The people are very friendly after living here. I stopped at a restaurant in the canyon once and the owners came over and sat down and talked to me. That was pretty nice.

I used to love to go to Mr Langer's store but I understand that he was sick and the store is gone.

I have stayed in Custer State Park and loved all of the animals there, especially those burros.

So, why are you there?

Yeah, move down south or south and west river. And dont let one of the inbreds on here talk smack about tribal land, theres nothing wrong with the natives.

Isn't it against the law for a non-Native to live on tribal land?

Reccomend Custer at least when its not tourist season (I hunt there in fall & spring) I can't remember the name of the restaurant but the food is really good & the waitresses warn you about the size of the pancakes. "You want two?" Do you know what you're doing?"
