There's a great BBQ stand in Duck, NC, just turn left instead of right into Kitty Hawk.
There's plenty to do and see, but realize you are at peak tourist time, so it will be crowded.
Eat the local seafood, especially the crabs and fish!!

Take the ferry over, keeping your vehicle. You should be able to go to the southern end, some 22 miles further down. When I was there, the beach was about 300 feet wide and covered with everything imaginable!! Enjoy!!
I had a Ford 4 x 4, so was able to stay on the outside almost back to the ferry landing. Didn't see another track till I was less than two miles from the landing.

I was stationed at Oregon inlet search and rescue team for a few years. Loved every minute of it. Check out the gardens and the aquarium over in Manteo. The wright memorial in Kill Devil hills and take a ride up to Carolla light visit the light house. Great vacation choice. Deep sea fishing is top notch because your only 20 miles from the gulf stream. And 200 miles off the northern point of the Bermuda triangle. This area is known as the Atlantic grave yard. Check out the coast guard life saving museum too.have fun!!
