I've always thought the flint hills between emporia and Wichita was a pretty area along the turn pike.
There's more to do in Kansas then people think. Just have to search around on google. Not real exciting to some, but there are alot of historical towns in Kansas.

Some of the lakes aren't bad if your into camping out for a night or 2. Milford sucks right now though with the algae issue we have.

Who in their right mind, would want to move to kansas in the first place? Kansas is not flat, despite what you hear, we do have hills.

Cali is well......I love my home state...but the economy has takin a dump!!! and Kansas isn't really that bad, so far!! but Cali is a great place to visit, Horrible place to live...crime rate has more than tripled, and cost of living is three times what it is here!!

If you're in Atchison, make the drive up the road to White Cloud, Kansas ... There is a place on the Missouri River you can take a picture overlooking the Missouri River ... And from the lookout ... You can see four states - Kansas ... Nebraska ... Missouri ... And Iowa ... Then drive on up highway 7 to Rulo, Nebraska and drive across the Missouri river bridge ... It is old old old and scary ... I had to cross it one time when I was behind a large John Deere row crop tractor and you could feel the bridge bouncing like crazy ... I guess that is why they are building a new bridge right next to it ... Also ... Make a short drive to Hiawatha and visit the Davis memorial ... The story says a man lost his wife during the great depression ... He had lots of money ... And he built a memorial to his wife after she died ... If you go ... Go in the evening ... It is CREEPY ... It is a huge memorial to his wife and it is full of strange statues ... If you go in the evening and stare at the statues ... You will swear you saw one of the creepy statues move ... And it is in a fairly large cemetery ... Also in the winter ... Drive to Weston Missori and go snow skiing ... Yes ... Skiing .... In Missouri ... Also drive highway 7 from White Cloud to Leavenworth ... It has been called one of the prettiest drives in Kansas ... The hills were supposedly formed by glaciers. Also ... Go to BoBos in Topeka ... A run down hamburger place with great burgers ... It was featured on the food channel a few years back ... If you have kids ... Take them to the overland station in Topeka ... Kinda pricey ...but it is a great train museum ... Go to the sixth street park in Atchison ... Supposedly in the 20s a girl was raped there in the park and you can hear her ghost scream at midnight in the park ... Also ... Go eat at trails cafe in holton ... Go eat at Buzz cafe in Sabetha ... If you have kids ... Bern Kansas has a great playground ... If you ever go to holton ... Go seven miles west of town on I think it is k16 ... Take a right on the road that goes to Soldier Kansas ... They nickname that road the roller coaster road ... There is a hill on the road ... When you start DOWN the hill you CANNOT see the bottom of the hill until you get halfway down ... The hill is that steep ... Eat at Jett's pizza in holton ... Go eat at the burger place in Wathena Kansas ... It sits right on the highway ... Just don't ever speed in Wathena ... It is a one horse man ... And he will fall out of nowhere and he will stick you for EVERYTHING ... Speeding ... Insurance. ...I hope this helps.

Konza prairie has hiking just outside Manhattan. Also, the entire hwy 177 from Manhattan to Cassoday is really great. Tallgrass national park is just north of Strong City. All of that is great off the beaten track flint hills. An easy day trip from KC, Wichita, or most places in eastern KS.
Lawrence has a great downtown, but there are definitely tons of cool small towns with hole in the wall type places. I think Kansas Sampler Foundation publishes lots of cool things to do in small towns around the state. I think they have a chicken fried steak tour or something even, all the p,aces in the state where the serve hand breaded, made from scratch chicken fried steak.
