Use left over yarn to make a granny square blanket. Short pieces for the centers, longer for the middle, etc. No yarn goes to waste.

The good thing is that you can make as many squares as you have yarn for and set them aside. After a while you can match enough squares to complete a blanket. Remember all the squares don't have to be the same, just complimentary to each other.

Hm, I used to have scraps all over... I do some blankets but a lot of toys. I usually just try to minimize my scraps, shorter starting tail when possible, so they're often too short to do anything with later (4" or less.) and with toys they just get tucked or coiled inside to add to the stuffing.

I keep my starting ends short too, but I usually make granny squares and always seem to end up with a little of the seen left over that is not enough for the size squares I make. try using scraps up by using them to connect my squares but still end up with left overs. making toys with the scraps is a good idea if I ever get the courage to move out of my Afgan comfort zone. Thanks for your advice beadz

I crochet but I'm really bad at it! I'm self-taught so I never knew if I was doing it right.

I'm self taught as well.

There's a lot of books out there but this one is pocket sized and was my best friend for some time:

I love the idea of donating the scrapes to a church or school for kids crafts. I didn't think of that.Hello everyone I am new to the site. I have been crocheting for years, taught by my mom and passed it to my girls (2). They have steered from it and is trying sewing and needlepoint. which gives us a vaiety of things to make and give for gifts sometimes we have a girls night and do what we do and talk.. it'a nice (they are 22 and 24 years old). has anyone tried making the baby cacoon? That is my next project to accomplish.

You could tie them together and then crochet them into a pillow or scarf, etc.

You could also tie them into little bows. Then glue them on blankets or pillows.

I started crocheting about a year ago. I have learned a few stitches so far. I have made a hat, a few scarfs, a blanket and still working on 3 more blankets. I would love to learn to read patterns and do more than just straight lines.

Most patterns are easy to read. They explain the abbreviations all you need to know is the stitch and how to count them.

My friend, uses left over yarn to crochet blankets for the dog/cat shelters. Just start crocheting add yarn as you go until reach what you need. Cats and Dogs dont mind if there is different colors or odd stiches. Just a note, you will need to use same ply or weight.

Have you ever checked youtube, they have videos that instruct how to do crochet stitches, I've made a few things after watching those videos. When my daughters were little I would take scraps, crochet about 20 chains, then I would double crochet twice {occasionally 3 times, to help the curl a bit more] in each chain, it will curl. Then chain a straight chain that is long enough to tie a bow around little girls pony tails. I usually sew about 10-12 inches here. After you have that part crochet another 20 stitches, double stitch twice in each chain, 3 double chains will not hurt if you add occasionally, when you reach the 20th chain, weave the thread through, tie the knot. You have a beautiful hair decoration for a girls pony tail, tying it on with the long straight chain in the middle, tying it into a bow, the curly chains will hang on each side. Doesnt take long to make one.

Ive been crocheting since I was 9. Ive made a lot of things but the most Ive made were baby afghans to sell. I couldnt work fast enough to keep up with the orders sometimes. I didnt have to advertise, the word of mouth and places I crocheted in were all I needed. I used to take my crocheting in the bar where I ate my lunch and in the break room before work. Now I just have a bag ready to grab when I go out the door for dr visits and such. There's a site called Crochet Talk where people share information and patterns that you might get some help from on the scrap yarn. Also for those little snippets of yarn that arent big enough to do anything with try setting it out on the porch railing or somewhere where the birds will see it when they are making their nests. It adds color to their creativeness.

Hi,
I'm new on here. I use my scraps for toys. I design and crochet toys for a farmers market. finger puppets are great because you don't need a lot of yarn and who cares what colors they are. if it's multicolored it's an alien or a monster. the kids love them.
I also use them for things like making eyes, ears and noses. so many uses. my students bring me their scrap yarn. If anyone lives in the Richmond/ Fredricksburg area and needs lessons. I teach for $8 an hour. I have crocheted for 40 years.

I use my scraps to make "scrappy" scarves or coaster sets.

Another thing you can use with leftover scrap yarn is to cut them into 2 or 3 inch pieces for a latch-hook picture.

Granny's daughter afghan is a great pattern for using scraps of yarn. Also use scraps for fringe for other projects such as scarves.

I love to crochet! I started with Afghans and have moved to the amigurami toys and decorations. I sometimes use the scraps of yarn to stuff the small ones with. If you don't overfill they come out soft and you don't have to buy fiberfill for them.

This was made with a shell stitch. The brown area was back stitch only while the other colors were done through both stitches. This was an order for someone. It's queen sized. I found that it went rather quickly because I used a large needle.

I am just now learning to crochet. Trading one habit for another. This will sure make you have to concentrate, but it seems to be working. I thought I could crochet year's ago, made a few things, but now I see the difference...looking much better.

Recently I tried to make slouch hat's. Didn't work out as planned, so still trying. I should have them figured out by next winter.

Interesting thread, good info.

I'm left handed and had to basically teach myself, used the books and followed instructions, but now with you tube you can find video's oh how to crochet for both left and right hand stitches. plus all it is is practice, practice, practice. if you don't like the way something looks, rip it out and start over. there are some days that everything I have done I tear out and start over

I like the idea of using it for stuffing. I also read in someone's blog that they take some put it on tree branches, so the birds can use it when building there nests.
