Skin-Sparing Mastectomy

What is Skin Sparing Mastectomy (SSM)?

A skin-sparing mastectomy, also known as breast-conserving surgery, is a way to treat cancer, and save the breast skin. In so doing it causes much less scarring than a traditional mastectomy. The skin-sparing procedure removes cancerous breast tissue through a small incision usually around the areola area of the nipple. The surgeon leaves most of the breast skin, creating a natural skin envelope, or pocket, that is filled with a breast implant or with the patient’s own tissue from another part of her body. The skin-sparing technique significantly improves the cosmetic outcome and gives the best option for reconstruction.

I'd post a picture of all this procedure but it may be censored by someone

sorry but boobs are nothing more than fat glands used to feed our babies.. at my age, Id rather have life than artificial boobs. I was given that choice and chose to preserve what I have. This is me, who I am and who I was meant to be.. real, not artificial.

*NO disrespect to your friends mother or any other lady who chose reconstructive or artificial implants.. this is MY opinion and MINE alone. *
We all do what fits OUR needs

I was 37 and I was devastated but even then, I said no to anything artificially implanted. And 2 months later came the scare of all the leaks women were having from them.. big news on tv and in papers.

Someone was guiding me NOT to do it .. and Im grateful now.. too much chance of infection as many women found out, too late.

Back up, Sorpdable ......

~~ "if i have to support breast cancer survivors" ??????

~~ "women fighting to get back their confidence or whatever they were once in their past" ??????

When was the last time you had your ballbearings greased, Sorp???????

What a typical, chauvenistic, pandering, and patronizing comment to make.

You don't HAVE to do a dayum thing you don't WANT to do ~~ and breast cancer survivors will fight and survive without your macho-type mindset. And don't forget: If you ever develop breast cancer, as a man, you will be needing someone to support you during and after your life-changing illness, if you survive. (and from your pics I have seen you are pre-disposed to develop breast cancer due to all the fat cells in your body.)

'Getting their confidence back'?????????? why you dippy ignoramous ..... I am sure you would NOT be the one to help breast cancer victims to get their confidence back!!!!!

'or WHATEVER'?????????? ........ Dumbass ...... A human's ttis, mammary glands, boobs, ta tas, teats ~~~~~ what ever name you want to use ~~ are nothing more than another organ of the body. That organ does NOT define the person. (Just as a man's penis does not define him as a person.)

Educate yourself before you try to advise the knowledgable. (as you so often do)

Your opinion, Sorp, could not float a boat in the middle of the Pacific.

I may be a "freak" to you but I have the balls to call you on your BS. And your regurgetated cud still needs to be chawed on fer awhile.

Stating your comments as YOUR OPINION just don't cover the totality of your ignorant statements where WOMEN and breast cancer are concerned. So what if SOME women have told something about anything ...... you still base "your opinion" on their opinion. Right???????

Thinking for myself is something I do quite often ..... have you ever attempted it?

Fishing - we all deal with it differently. I chose reconstruction and have never regretted it. I do sometimes regret not having augmentation but not very often!

Binbasha - the nipple is done at the FINAL reconstruction and they did a skin graft from my leg (which was probably the most painful part) of the two reconstructive surgeries. Did you know they also tattoo the color? Oh, yeah, the pulling up the shirt to show it off is a pretty natural reaction for at least the first couple of years..or maybe that was just me?

I'mma skeered of boobs.

One minute your minding your own business...

The next you've lost an eye in an industrial nipple accident.

Then you have to walk around with an eye patch, a parrot on your shoulder,
and going 'Arrrrrgggggg' at everyone for the rest of your life.

I guess it is a different month awareness. @jest.

I fully "support" breast cancer awareness.

Makes sense that mate have discovered lumps and saved her life maybe cuz between mamgrams...a growth can occur. Is self exam or your mate most likely to find difference faster. Ok. You know what to do

Jest ~~ Colon cancer (in fact, all known cancers) are supported by groups and organizations which focus on the spcific type cancer involved.

Breast cancer is such a major killer of woman (and men) that the entire month of October has been declared as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast Cancer is such a devastating disease, and major killer, and the emotional and phychological damage, not to mention the disfigurement of the human body, make the cause of Breast Cancer Awareness, treatment and prevention the highest priority for current medical scientific research.

Men are visual animals, not analytical, therefore the human breast has become synonymous with women. Breast Cancer is not a women's illness -- like testicular cancer is for boys & men ~~ Breast Cancer is a PEOPLE illness.

Supporting Breast Cancer research, loved ones stricken with the disease, and giving of one's times to help in FINDING THE CURE is always appreciated.

My sister has invasive cancer. She has also had breast cancer.
She opted for reconstructive surgery using a stomach muscle to replace the breast. Unfortunately, the surgeon used contaminated water and she developed a bad infection and lost the replacement. She couldn't sue but she did get the surgeons to stop using water that had been opened for a previous surgery.
I said this on the another thread, my sister was also the 1% that gets cancer that returns to the spot where the breast was removed. If so much as one cancer cell is missed and/or survives cancer treatment, it returns.

I do think skin cancer is much worse to cure than breast cancer.
There are many cancers that need to be drawn to our attention. I think they use breast cancer to get more financial backing to hopefully address all forms of cancer and to support all cancer patients.

You know CT, my sister jokes about her cancer. She knows every day she has is a blessing.
She still is a mean, ornery woman that can bite the head off anyone. She is still the drama queen that everyone gathers around to hear her colorful stories and laughs in delight. Is she scared inside? I'm sure. Has it changed her? Yes and no.

Yeap, bin, mine were perky for about 10 years! I had a fantastic plastic surgeon who did such a great job that other doctors had their associates come in and take a look! Hell, I told my eye doctor about the breast cancer at my next visit and he asked to see it. After all I went through, I used to show anyone who asked about it. Now, sixteen years later, it is just the same to me as my God given boob!

I was interviewed for the book "Breasts" by Meema Spadola and they used a story but the chapter With or Without Breast starts with this quote:

"I realized then that my breasts were something I always took for granted."
--Donna, forty-nine

Yeap, I did! And now I am so thankful to the plastic surgeon who did the reconstruction because until I had it, every time I looked at myself I thought "cancer".

I would say that only people who suffered from cancer -any- can understand what you are saying.
Fortunately, now-days reconstructive surgery is done automatically...UNLESS THE PATIENT SIGNS TO THE CONTRARY. Studies have shown that the "new boobs", as a friend wishes to call her's, have an enormously positive impact on the patient's physical and emotional recovery.

Perhaps they are out in real life trying to make a difference for this cause? Kudos, however, to Bin's thread.

Sure, this is a very important issue that affects women direct/indirectly....
Now, I think posting here....which is a mean of communication that reaches the country and overseas... is of extreme importance because there are many women who don't watch TV and/or read articles on this topic. Additionally, here we read "direct experiences with this disease".

Bin, as I said in my e/mail to you...your thread is much appreciated. Thank you.

Simply answering your question....why aren't more people posting here?...I think it is because they are out making a difference in real life for the cause...who knows, those bazaars and K5 races may generate more cash than posting on DH? Thanks, again, Bin for your thread.

could be people are uncomfortable with the unknown and that scares them, some just dont give a dam, and others may still be grieving in their own way. give them time and educate the ones that are scared.

I don't doubt the bazaars and craft shows are generating a lot more money than posting in DH...but those bazaars and fairs are not reaching as many ladies...and people in general. Both means are necessary. Thank you.

Well, threads such as this one are "one more venue" to educate those who for one reason or the other don't have access to this type of information.

To be honest with you all, I have avoided this thread.
Yes, I get my examines and check regularly.
Yet, I do find threads of this nature painful. Brings back
far too many bad memories.
My husband died from a rare throat cancer due to smoking and
drinking in his younger years. The way I understood it was that
it takes hundreds of thousands of these cells to even show up.
By then it is too late. I took care of him personally till the
very end. It was not an easy task.....at times it was a real
horrible nightmare. Sometimes I can still hear his screams...
Now I simply stay away from topics such as this.
However, I do not wish this disease on anyone. Not even my worst enemy.

The fundraisers are reaching the citizens with cash in their pockets and ,obviously, dedicated to the cause. The Internet overly stimulates...so many important topics brought to surface...one can get overwhelmed...so, back to the question, I think the real supporters of this cause are out in real life actually doing something.DateHookUp definitely spreads awareness.

Seems I've lost my battle here on Dh. Lost my sister too!
I tried, but someone is definitely flagging me.
God blessed me with heathly breast, that are real by the way .
I really thought this group was mature enough to handle a simple picture ,Not!
I'm under review at this time. and at my age, can you believe this .
Again my heart goes out to all of you that have fought and won and the ones who have fought and lost their lives.
Bless you all!
Much love

just by you being here posting what you said i part of the healing process you are going threw. someday you will be able to tell your whole story and educate people who are going threw what you have already been threw. people are scared they have no one to turn to, you could be a supporter to them and help them get threw their bad times and fears. no one should go threw this alone no one.
so blue thank you for dropping in and sharing.

Do wish to add........I do believe thaere has been a break through in the cure for cancer. Also that the medical field or scientist does not disclose it. I say this for more than one reason. This one stands out in my mind. There is a rich man here,( who has cancer), that made a deal with some doctors.....he would build a new hospital, give free flight service for patients and ongoing funding as long as they kept him alive. Once he died the funding would stop. That was years ago and he is still with us.
Just think how many medical scientists would be unemployed if a cure was found. There would no longer be any need for funding their research. Sad to think.

star... dont give in to the few

but share with the masses.

the few who flag just dont get what your purpose was about or dont care.. sad for them to be so uncaring or uneducated.

I too am very lucky.. next time... who knows?
