I am helping a relative whom I helped years ago with an SSI application to apply for SSDI.
OMG! I have spent 7 hours doing the online application and creating the Adult Disability Report. Holy Hannah! I have 27 pages in that thing and it doesn't include any of the actual medical reports. I'm concerned I forgot some doctors and hospitals since this person has such a complicated medical history.
If I drank I'd go get hammered. Since I don't, I'm going to get another cup of coffee, put some food in my tummy and go to my 12 step meeting to decompress.
No wonder folks can't get approved. How many of you have actually completed - in depth - the Adult Disability Report? It is enough to drive a saint to drink and curse - at the very least. And no wonder this person didn't get it the last two times. We had to start from scratch.
When I hear others kvetch about how easy it is to get on disability I simply stare at them. They're mad.

If denied. Go get an attorny. It took me 2.5 years to get it. Good luck and yes the app and process will drive you nuts so hang in there.

Well, I don't think this relative will be denied this time as I am putting in everything but the kitchen sink and sending it as the advocate. We'll see. If it needs a specialist I will tag one of my law school comrads in arms. But I think burying them with info will do wonders.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Ironic that SSDI should also be an acronym for "Social Security Death Index," but I'd been receiving benefits for 16 years with nary an issue, but because the system is cracking down on every active claim and wanted reaffirmation of my qualifications to continue, I was recently put through a similar SSA ringer.
The packet I got in the mail weighed about 2 pounds and involved 17 forms of questions requiring information I had to go through hell to acquire, not to mention ascertain. That was the part that worried me too ... making absolutely sure that every answer I applied was correct and verifiable, knowing that ANY error can (and will) suspend (or deny) a claim.
Luckily, due to the nature of my disability, I knew going in that the judgment call end up in my favor, but that didn't make the exercise any easier to endure. However, beyond the confirmation letter I would receive roughly two weeks later, I was especially relieved, because they didn't demand from me the arduous series of physicals and professional endorsements generally expected of new applicants.
The one thing that did amaze me though, was the incredibly efficient way the SSA operates given the astonishing volume of people they have to deal with day-by-day.

I was denied SSDI due to a catch 22, though I was given permanent SSI as compensation. Very frustrating too accept, but I made the decision not to appeal then because I thought that they might later approve me for SSDI during my re-evaluations they do every number of years (what many original caseworker recommended). Nothing yet.
The whole reason I ws born with a disability was because three drunk & high drag racing motorcyclists crashed into the passenger side of the car, where my mother was situated (she was six months pregnant with me). I had a cerebral stroke on impact.
My attorney won me enough settlement money for my medical treatments, schooling (including all college), & expenses. That was it though. By the time I was in my last year of post grad when funds ran dry. I was 22. Yet I had documentation &even the criminal records of the event. Because I was over 18 when I applied, I was required to have 2 credits, but when I had my attorney apply for me every year before that, I would be denied because of the settlement. Then without the settlement I had the technicality.

This is why people hire attorney's. They can only get 25% of back pay if one gets any otherwise they charge a decent amount to do the paperwork.

Well, I am one (attorney) but I don't do this kind of law, so this is a real eye-opener to me. I told her that if (when) she gets this she owes me dinner. I am trying to be so comprehensive up front that I kick down the doors and get it the first time around. It does happen. In fact, I got her SSI years ago. After working, though, it seems to be hell on earth to get. Either that or times have changed.

I fear for others that with the new Laws from Obama it is going to be next to impossible to get.

The Presidency does not create laws. Congress does. I've not heard anything like that and I know lots of SSI/SSDI attorneys.

Seversl politicians in michigan were campsining to eliminate medicare and medicaid. Two years ago they cut over 30'000 kids out of the school meals program. My food benefit went from 200 a month to 16 with no notice. My insursnces ( meficaid and medicare a, b, and d ) are regulatly changef with no notice. Si the meds that cost $1 and kept me out of an ambulance now cost 180. Small note, no doctor will write a script thsts vovered by whstever coverage you have this month. In 2 days ive wslked 9 miles in the rail to find out i couldnt afford thr meds cos my coverage changed. I got to devide between staying out of another ambulance or spending $22 on food. Doesnt help to be disbetic eithet. Im not whining for me. Most people font underdtand this is the reslity many face. For a guy who isnt supposed to be able to wslk, this creates a special hardship. Only had to fight 6 1/2 yrs to get to this level. Stivks in my craw to heat politicians say were all in this together. I dont see anybody else. If you know someone having a hard time, heres a neat ifea. Take them a bag of food. If youre on ssd you dont eat squat the ladt week. Take them a cup if ciffe; sit and talk with them aehile. Do them a favor; put up with the hey can you do this gor me stuff. Its stuff thry cant do. Doesnt take much time or effirt ti let someone know theyre not invisible. And if only for minute somebody gave a @&%$` . Nothing at all to you. Best tjing happened to them all week, maybe all month. Its a simple concept. See somenody that doesnt have? Ill bet you have extra. I would think the next step would be logical. And for all thsts good, if you know child.living with little food, please take them some. Just walj up smiling, say hi merry christmas. Hand them the food and walk away. People complain about eating a bowl of rice for xmas. Not many people think about people that wont even had that. Want a taste of thrir life? Dont eat xmas day and spend 48 hrs outside. Thats only the first step too.

You have to be unemployed for at least a year... And I've heard it takes up to 3 years to get assisted by attorney of course... However if you plead your case after being denied you will likely get it. I tried but gave up after I was sent the paperwork. I getting my social worker to help me fill out the papers

I do hear from my friends how hard it was for them to apply and eventually be approved for SSDI. I applied May 2012 and was approved in 3 months. My disability was an injury from falling out of a big rig in 2011 and breaking my right hip(had total hip replacement). I went back to work after all of this but had to eventually stop working because of the pain in my hip/legs. Had to go back in for another hip replacement on same hip.. Sept.2012. I received 3 months worth of SSI until my SSDI check started, then the SSI stopped. I did fill out all of the paperwork for my SSDI myself but it was pretty clear cut so I guess that's why I was approved so fast? I did call my caseworker at SS about every day and tell him that I was 2 steps from being homeless with no income coming in! He was actually a nice guy who sounded sincere in helping others when he could! I don't think it is always the case workers who turn down SSDI but it's the rules and regulations that they have to follow! I also feel that they looked at my age and employability now and decided to go ahead and approve me. My Orthopedic surgeon was a big help for me also. He wrote a detailed letter to them stating my condition and he did not see me working in the future without total retraining in a different profession...I have been driving a big rig for 15yrs.
God Bless each of you and I wish you all the best of luck with getting approved soon!!

@dawgpaws - you will need a RFC which stands for Residual Functional Capacity form. You can find it online in PDF. I have it on my computer.
I didn't hire an attorney although shopped around a bit. Once I found out that attorney's paperwork states something to the effect that most likely everyone is denied on the first try, I thought I'd take my chances. I didn't want to pay attorney fees from my check. Turned out I was approved on the first try. You just need a little bit of luck.

Hello all, I was approved for SSDI in 08, I got it on my first try with no lawyers. What I did is I went to an agency that not only got my money for me they also helped my out by setting me up with mental health care at a very low cost me. Since then I have helped 2 others get SSI, and when I say help I mean doing the paper work making phone calls setting up appointments, and going with them on the appointments.
