Just a quick observation about my area: Figured out years ago if people-especially new arrivals or strangers-said "There is nothing to do here", the locals will agree and ask when you are leaving. Said another way, insult their home and they won't tell you sh*t.
Be nice, ask questions, tell people what you like and chances are, it's going on right under your nose. Chatting up friendly people even at WalMart has worked wonders for me. If from out of town, ask waitresses or even at the library, if you do "country" things, you already know to go ask at the feed store. Many areas are "dry" in the Bible Belt so we get a little more creative than going to the bar and picking over the leftovers carrying God-knows-what little souvenier for you to take back home.
