Here's what I do: Think of a circumstance of situation that you feel strongly about. Then describe it in 1-3 sentences as if you were talking to a friend. Use that as your chorus and the rest should flow from there.

Create your idea with no pre-judgement - let it flow - then work through it with adjustments like Beethoven did, until you have an original or unique concept; everything you have ever heard WILL influence you in some way

I spent 12 years in Nashville and learned how to write songs the right way. One thing I learned is that when trying to come up with ideas for songs, think about things people can identify with. If you want to make money writing songs, you have to write songs that artists will record. When artists look for songs to record they look for songs the average person can identify with because it is these people that go to WalMart and buy the CDs so they look for those types of songs. That is the key. Artists don't want your sappy song about your broken heart.

Of course. Happens to everyone. Try this: Don't listen to anything (no radio, no cd, no mp3, for 2 months. Sometimes subconsciously we plagiarize a little unknowingly.
