I used to own one. Short of snagging the bumper of the car directly in front of you, the only other way to do so would be to trade it in. This time, try a better car. That's what I did.

That model is not known for its power or handling, if you can find/import an Escort Cosworth you will be in the business. If you are looking for something state-side, cheaper, then you are better off with a big 'ole hunky V8. The manufacturer doesn't really matter as all domestics are generally the same. They are all solid rear axle, most have leaf spring rear suspension and independent front suspension with a truck motor and steering.

If you would like to save yourself the headache, buy a Toyota, Nissan, or VW. They are much more fun and the cost of ownership is drastically less than anything made in the 50 (which really aren't made here .. more like made in Mexico now).

Take the fuel regulator off and put an adjustable one on. Bump up the fuel pressure. You shoulld notice a difference.

Well, that works well on turbo cars with a boost controller turned up, but how would that do anything to a NA car? They actually make more power toward a lean condition... Not with more fuel.

Dude, it's an Escort......enough said! If you want bang for your buck go find an LS powered Trans Am or Camaro, or a Mustang GT....they're not hard to find and not that expensive. Add a couple bolt ons later and you'll have a quick and nice sounding car without no where near the money you'd waste on an Escort that still won't come close to beating or out handling these 3 cars I mentioned.

Considering an fbody isn't exactly a handling machine... Lol. I had a 2000 zx2 with a hybrid T04E/T3 turbo, SVT camshafts, a decent tune and a ported head. The only issue I had was torque steer. The car made360hp, was streetable, and ran on premium on its normal tune. Withthe boost up, decent gas and a bumped timing curve, it pushed the 500hp barrier. Total cost involved? Less than an LSA powered car and still cheap insurance. Try something different...

If you can find a Corvette or Trans Am .. sure .. Mustangs are everywhere and everyone knows if you drive one in the rain it is going to find a tree to hug.

Just bumping up the fuel pressure, without knowing the duty cycle, along with the wastegate is a dangerous thing. Best thing is to have a professional tuner handle all of that if you are not so equipped.

I drive my Cobra in the rain. Haven't met many trees. Care to explain a little bit about how you could make such a claim? Then again, if it's a trans-am hell it wouldn't survive the rain, after all most of them from the 90's back are all rusted out or on cinderblocks huh?

Snarky remarks sir. Snarky remarks.

If the motor is a zetec motor, it would be easy to turbo and 300hp would be an easy goal. Look up some turbo builds for the escort, with enough research you'll find people who have done it with success.

Just drop a jet engine in. Oh we aren't just saying stupid shit that comes off the top of our heads?

Be realistic. It's a FWD car. A compact (essentially) 2 seater. A v8 conversion is costly. Drivetrain swap, costly. Turbo build, costly in long run to do it right.

A SVT contour powertrain swap is possible. That would be a stout v6 installed. Or swap over the SVT Focus powerplant. The real questions though that haven't been asked were budget, time, and ability. No budget, no point in starting. No time, but have money, pay someone else to do it. No ability and no money, provide beer to the best wrench turners you know.

Buy an older GT Mustang that already has power in it. Just drive it and have fun with it.

Im assuming 2.3L 4cyl which could be built up a little. Bore and stroke the motor upgrade the pistons, cam and being a 99' there are probably chips you can plug into the cars computer, however I dont recommend putting anything major in without consulting a tuning shop. A chip can make the car run very different but if the motor isnt built right, then it will cause damage in time. Turbos are an option for a 2.3 but again I would drop a turbo on any car that wasnt tuned or built to handle the extra HP. Another thing to consider is transmisson and rear axle gearing. All the power in the world wouldnt do any good if the transmisson and rear end were geared like a pickup truck. And look into part swaps. A rear axle from a 93' fox body mustang gt might fit under it and if its anything like the old escorts, it will have parts that can be upgraded from Kia, Mazda, and of course Ford. for example the front suspention from an 01' Kia rio may work. Keep in mind that swapping front or rear axles means keeping track of bolt pattern. The stock escort wheels might not fit on an axle from a mustang. check out www.fordfestiva.com Theres a LOT of escort owners there and they can tell you far more than I can about that cars TRUE potential.

One motor swap option is the Ford Tarus SHO V6. Not overkill and still decent on gas. If the 99' escort is FWD then any V6 or V8 motor will be difficult although possible to fabricate. It does mean converting the car to RWD. It really depends on what you want out of the car and how far you are willing to go to make it work. Heck theres a guy I know with an 89 ford festiva rocking a suzuki Hyabussa motorcycle engine. Ive also seen that motor dropped into a smart car. BUT thats taking it to the extreme. I still say you could build and tune that 2.3 and maybe give it a turbo and that would be all the motor needed but again I stress that you shouldnt use a turbo without a motor built to handle it.

Small American econo cars can be built up go to the parts department of your local ford dealer ship ask to see the "other book" they should have a book of all the factory mods and bolt ons that the manufacture use for demo and show cars. Example did you know you could get a super charger from the factory for a dodge omni 2.2 motor

Also ford escorts were widely raced over seas check over in Europe for info
