I don't buy that premise. My E36 was keyed. Some people are just jealous haters.
You're right, in this world we have the good the bad and the ugly

Mate did up a nice local old musclecar with a beautiful paintjob and someone keyed that.
Some people are just upset with seeing nice things or things that others care about.
Benz stars area a favourite to bend and break off in car parks. That's annoying but hasn't happened to me yet thankfully.
Stealing a Benz is damn near impossible. My ignition lock got old and too worn to work anymore, but you have to be able to turn the key to accessories to change the barrel.
Otherwise two hardened-steel rods running down the steering column lock into place and the lock can't be removed without pulling apart the entire dashboard and pulling the entire steering column.
It sat in a Euro-specialist workshop for a week, being moved around using trolley-jacks until the entire steering was pulled just to replace the ignition lock. Nobody was able to unlock the steering-lock, or work around the ignition, even the trans locks in but you can pull the centre consol and shifter assembly to work around that.
But the ignition and steering-lock, there's no physically mechanical workaround whatsoever, not according to the Dealer, Mercedes themselves, nor any Mercedes qualified workshop. We checked them all, even had a locksmith come out. He said, it'd take him a full day and about a thousand bucks to have a go at it, but he made no guarantees and still had to be paid.
We wound up pulling the steering assembly. It was cheaper.
No way on earth you steal a benz without a working key. Just no way. Really. It's not an immobilizer, not an alarm, just mechanical locks engineered into the car prevent it specifically.

I've been in love with the 3 series since some years back...I adore them....but I had a saab 9-3 couple years ago and I've been turned out ever since.
If I had money like that I'd grab a 3 series as a 2nd vehicle, but saabs are my shit now.

Neither, the maintenance and repair costs are way too high.
