For those of you who are accomplished at writing or composing music, how do you approach it? Do you have a process such as using a keyboard? Do you hum it out first and write down the chord melody? How do you get it from inside your noggin out onto your instrument? What is your process?

For me it starts with the melody. Whether its the lyric line in a song with words or a repeating melodic line it all starts there. If this is going to be a lyrical composition, then the words come next. If not, the melody stands when developed for that part.
After all the main melody parts are written (and/or lyrics) then I start to compose rhythm and accompanying lines around it to enhance the main line, layering as many or few as the song requires. This is the hard part. Sometimes it is hard to step back and realize that the composition only needs certain things and not over-write it. Then I enlist the help of people to write things I don't, like percussion. Or more correctly, write parts that are humanly possible to play.
That's basically my process

Music and lyrics together make a song.--many times the music, rhythm, beat can come to a person easier who does not write lyrics regularly. That deals with the instrument more.On average the lyrics are written first and music put to the words. And then taking time to,experiment,to create a song different from other songs. We always have to double check our beats and rhythm's,cords, notes used patterns-of a song, not to be something done before that just happens to be a favorite, avoiding copy right violations etc.........but if one is an over all musician-and lyric writer, song creator---the basic idea of-beat and rhythm will come to you with the words, lyrics.A lot of thinking is involved and listening to sounds etc......with my self, can happen either way--music-for words-or words for music.....sometimes a simple new sound will fit into an already existing lyrics written--taking notes and taking time to create.Key to music creativity. So nothing set n stone....so to speak.
