Hey! I am single mother, who has an autistic child. Was wondering if there was anyone that can relate. I feel very alone, an not a lot of people want to take the time to understand.

Really, my daughter is going to be 3, next month. She is starting therapy this week. I am excited and pray that it helps. She doesnt talk so she often has tantrums and she touches everything n climbs everything with no sense of safety. N i cant discpline here since she doesnt acknowledge she is being spoken too. I think its 10 times harder because im with her 24/7 with no breaks. I have lost friends n family wont help because they cant handle her an im just not sure what to do. Im sorry just had to vent lol

I'm going to have to agree with trying to use sign language. Look for the book title The Joy Of Sign. Communication is so important for both to understand each other better.

This is advise from experience with 2 sons labeled. Sensory issues. Lights, sounds, pictures, cartoon characters on t-shirts, backpack, even cups or bottles. I didn't find out until one day my son (then 15) told me out of the blue that he kept throwing his bottles when hw was little because the bears on it was looking at him. He was 6 when they told me that he would never be independent and probably be low funtioning. Now he's graduating high school in the top 4% of his class out of 640 kids. His GPA is near 5.0. He took AP and dual credit classes. He's earned college credits. It was hard but I talked to them like an adult (no baby talk) I explained everything and watched so I could understand them. You will know your child better than any therapist or psychologist. Find strength to have patience and walk away when on the edge of loosing it. (Mommy time out) you can get through this. Sorry this was so long.

Fortunately no of my children have a diagnosis.. However I an a behavioral Therapist for developmentally delayed children; mainly Autistic.
First let me say that by making someone pay attention and getting your child help at the age of 3 is HUGE and will be such a benefit in the years too come as long as you stay consistent...
Is your child completely non verbal? If he/she has any words concentrate on expanding there vocabulary (as that is the most universal) if not I agree, check in to learning and teaching sign which will be helpful and encourage motor skills.
In my professional opinion the most universal type of non verbal communication is P.E.C.S (Picture Exchange Communication System) your child will be able to communicate with any person they come across using this.
Make sure you check out Autism.org it's an amazing resource and good luck...
Early intervention is key, good for you on getting it done...
