We use helicopters now. Airborne was relevant a few wars back. It ain't today. Besides, for a couple hundred dollars, I can rent a parachute and pilot and jump out and be airborne qualified. Just don't see the point?

Some years ago pandiest I went with some guys and gals up to Skydive Richmond up in Indiana. Several of the guys had never jumped before ,we were all drinking and riding bikes. I think it cost like $180 bucks. Two hours after we got there they had these guys doing PLFs off a picnic table! I cracked up. Then they took us into the hanger where they had a mock up of a planes door and did some stuff and got some more instructions . We got fitted with a rig and climbed into a Otter and all did static line jumps. The whole thing didn't take three hours....

Why would someone want to jump out of perfectly good air craft. Sounds like a death sentence to me.

bier its a rush to be sure. I cant explain it to anyone who never did it but when you go out that door and fall its a bit scary especially at night. Then you hear your chute opening and get that pull from it, jerks you . Then everything is so damn quiet , just the wind and the sound of the plane drifting away....for about a minute and a half maybe...and the ground starts coming up at you! But you land and walk away and you know you beat death. Probably doesn't make sense to legs....no insult intended.

you know you beat death? really, whiskey? don't know the statistics but i'd be willing to bet good money that on a percentage basis far more people die in cars and even golf courses each year than die in a failed parachute jump during military training.

Air Assault has pretty much made airborne troopers (like me and others) dinosaurs. Makes a lot more sense.

I don't think we will ever see jumps of the scale of Normandy or in WWII again. The logistics and risks are outweighed by advances in insertion of troops in choppers. On the other hand a element of our ground forces will probably always be dedicated to airborne units. If you go down to Ft. Campbell (I have ) you will find a huge emphasis on air assault training there as well as several other bases.

Master rated jumpmaster, lots of foreign wings. Thai Balloon, Russian, Panama, UAE, German, Canadian, Honduran, a few others. Got screwed out of the Panama jump when the mission got delayed for a week and my unit went from DRF1 to DRF9. Sat on the flight line at Pope AFB with my ammo and chute and watched them fly away since we didn't get a bird. We had already trained to take down the prison. Our A Co. were the only guys in my battalion to go (3-505th), I was in B Co. Got turned around over the ocean enroute to Haiti in '94 when Jimmy Carter got it stopped. Talk about being deflated. We were supposed to drop into Saddam International in the invasion in '03 but a sandstorm halted the ground forces so the mission was scratched. We already had our chutes issued. We did an air assault into As Samawah instead.
