Hi,

I don't have an oven but do have a gas stove.

I would love to make a cake.

Many years ago, we made an oven out of a large pot placing sand (?? or some other soil mixed with clay?) in the pot and turned on the heat. There was perhaps a 1/2" of sand. It is allowed to heat for 10 minutes with a lid on it. In a smaller pot we put whatever we wanted to bake. Once the ambient temperature of the big pot got to what we needed, we dropped the little pot inside on the sand. Checked the heat frequently, and we were able to make a pizza.

Ok, this maybe 20 years ago and I think everything turned out great.

Now I am wanting to make a cake. I have a big pot. Sand is going to require a bicycle ride but no big deal. I need something to cook the cake in.

I'll check back here after getting the sand to see if anyone has any suggestions.

If not, 15 minutes and I'll hopefully get this fired up.

I'm hungry for breakfast which will be a vegan chocolate cake, coffee, bananas, and I really just want the cake.

Placing the cast iron pot on top of hot coals and having hot coals on top as well creates an oven effect-- you can stack em about 3 high and have a 3 course meal going-- chili or stew on bottom-- veggies in the middle-- cake, biscuits or a cobbler on top...

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE-- "Dutch ovens have been around for years and years and years. Now that most of us do our daily cooking indoors on and in modern stoves and ovens, it seems like Dutch oven cooking is more for hobbyists and campers. If you haven’t enjoyed Dutch oven cooking as the cook or the eater, you’ve been missing out! It’s a lot of fun."

"You can cook or bake practically anything in a Dutch oven — they are incredibly versatile. Over the years we’ve modified old family favorites for use in a Dutch oven as well as finding new ones."

"Dutch ovens come with heavy lids that provide a good seal during cooking. Because the Dutch ovens are made of heavy cast iron, they retain heat very well. In fact, they can stay warm for hours and hours after cooking. Dutch ovens are best used for recipes requiring a long, slow cooking time, like stews, roasts, chili, etc. But they can also be used for things that cook in 30 minutes or less, like quick breads, rolls, cakes and cobblers. Dutch ovens lend great flavor to food from the oven itself and the charcoal briquettes. (You can’t get that from your indoor oven or a slow cooker!) Though I’m not covering the techniques in this post, dutch ovens are great for cooking bread and deep frying, as well."

"Generally the cooking temperature will be about 350-400 degrees F. The cooking heat is generated from using coals placed underneath the pan and on top of the lid. You’ll see Dutch ovens with flat bottoms or with three little legs. The flat ones are better for indoor cooking. The ones with legs are the kind for outdoor use. I’m sure they were designed that way for other reasons too, but the little legs are nice because the Dutch oven keeps upright much better over the coals."

I bake cakes, biscuits, even roasts and chicken in a cast iron dutch oven when camping. Even have baked fish in one. Here at home I bake a pie in a cast iron skillets, they come out better than in aluminum pans or glass.

^^^^ I'd wager he doesn't even burn the bottom ... of those biscuits ... at least they have never lodged a complaint.

I should have posted a reply a long time ago...

So, I made a couple different attempts at this using the sand in a large pot with a pie pan filled with cake batter method

The first time was in the middle of the night, I had just gone out and was feeling tipsy. It is rare for me to drink so a thousand drinks really puts me over the edge. I came home long enough to get a bag and backpack. Then I road my bicycle around looking for sand. I don't know why I did this but I went inland and went for miles upon miles. Finally found a park which I took some sand from. Then I brought it back, attempted to heat up the sand in the pot. After it reached 300 degrees and nasty smell was produced. I think it was urine. It was disgusting.

I had already poured the cake batter into a pie crust. I tried to cook that directly on the grill. It boiled and was a mess but I still ate it. There wasn't egg or any other ingredient like that in it.

Attempt two I had been swimming late at night and then I realized the ocean is full of sand. I wanted to get the best sand possible so I swam out really far and then made my way to the bottom. i would grab a hand full, return to the surface, let shells and any other creatures go and then go to shore and put the sand in my bag. I repeated this for hours until the sun rose. I must have been out there for 5 hours!!!

When I put on the backpack, it was over 50 pounds because of the water weight. I road part way home when a strap broke. Lucky for me I was close to a client's business. I dropped it off in his catering truck and left him a txt asking him if he could take my bag to my work/home when he was going to come by. He was up or maybe I woke him "NP"

A couple days later he brought over the bag. His look on his face was a "wtf". I told him what was up and my intentions. There was a double wtf. He said if he wasn't in a hurry that he would watch for entertainment value. He also offered the use of his oven which I politely declined.

It took at least a week for the sand to completely dry. I used a method I saw in Bali where they collected salt from the sand. I put it on burlap sacks on the roof of my office. That made lots of questions daily.

When it dried, I used it that night. Amazingly, it heated up quickly, no smell and the temperature regulation was perfect. I used an infrared thermometer to monitor it. When I went to cook the cake there were bugs in the raw materials. Sucks**

I had to wait until the next morning when Sprouts opened (7am). I was there at the door when they opened. I went straight to the desert isle, got some double chocolate cake mix and road back. I should have taken the sand out of the pan over night but I didn't. I left it on the stove in the off position. The area is prone to moisture and the stove is outside. It was damp and some of the leaves from the tree above had dripped on the outside of the pan too. I was worried the sand was nasty.

To my surprise the sand was fine. It took two times the amount of time as before to heat it up. There was an abundance of steam that came out too but it was dry after that.

The cake was marvelous. Came out perfect. I made two batches. Second one I rushed because I had to go to work at 8:30am. Doesn't matter. It was great and everyone loved it.

dutch ovens ARE AMAZING! I concur!!!

when at first I did not have a stove or an oven, I made a lot of things on a hot plate and with a microwave, I lived that way for almost a year, it's not so bad
