I have a 1981 Dodge Diplomat thathas not been started in over a year. Yesterday I finally got some repair work done to it but when I tried to start it the key would not turn the switch. I had it running before but now the switch is in the lock postion. How can I free it to get to start the motor?

Yes, I did all that. I even had my co-workers try & it acts like there's not a key in it.

Key won't move the switch, it's locked.

There is a spring inside that could fail. It's better to just get a whole new IGN switch.

Yes I was told that would be the best solution for it. Thanks.

this ^^^^

moving the steering whel back and forth unlocks the steering column, allowing the key to engage (as long as it is in Park -- if not shift down to Neutral) <<< if that works --- better check your transmission fluid level.

Try shifting it in and out of park. Could be the pin is frozen preventing engagement. Works sometimes but not by any means a fix but at least you may be able to start it. Would go with the ign replacement for sure. Taking the column apart is not that hard. Only caveat is that you may need multiple keys unless you get it reset to you current key FYI.

Then it's officially jammed. Nothing to do but replace the ignition. Someone mentioned check tranny oil, if you are low may not shift out of gear as there will be no pressure however shouldn't stop the key from turning. Something mechanical is stopping it from engaging and my money is on the ignition cylinder. Try the power steering fluid level as well. Worth a shot.

Try putting some graphite in the ignition.

The ignition switch is not where the key goes in, it is further down the steering column connected by a steel rod to the ignition lock. The individuals who advise 'wiggling' the wheel while turning the ignition lock are correct, a little penetrating oil couldn't hurt either. On another note, that POS weighs a good two tons, worth at least 250.00 at a salvage yard.

Watch gone in 60 seconds, then disable the steering wheel lock and just push the rod to start it from now on. The key isn't the theft deterent, the dodge emblem is
