I started driving big trucks in the 60's.Back then it was very hard to keep the trucks from pumping black smoke out of the stacks. Now days with the technology advances black smoke is almost a thing of the past but as in everything else there seems to be some idiots who just can't seem to play by the rules. I can see turning up a stock for more power to pull and do different jobs but to blow smoke just to be doing it is just plain stupid. When congress gets involved it effects all of us and the outcome can't be good.

please share your thought and what can be done to put a stop to this practice before we all end up getting screwed.

Semper Fi !!!

"Rolling coal" is very similar to bullying, only in automotive form.
It involves taking a big diesel truck, and modifying it to spew huge clouds of soot into the air every time the driver stomps on the accelerator.

More recently, drivers of such vehicles have taken to doing it near hybrids, electric cars, cyclists, pedestrians and even the police--to intimidate or simply to make some kind of statement.

Video sites like YouTube are awash in short clips of huge pickups engulfing smaller vehicles in clouds of black soot.

And after experiencing coal-rolling first-hand, one New Jersey lawmaker is working to make the practice illegal in his state.

Last week, he was driving along the New Jersey Turnpike when a lifted pickup truck in front of him--equipped with twin smoke stacks--belched a large cloud of smoke over his car.

"People had been telling me this has been going on, but I hadn’t seen it," Democrat State Assemblyman Tim Eustace told NJ.com
He added that he was "surprised" to experience it himself.

He now plans to introduce a bill to make it illegal. Bill A3583 aims to prohibit "retrofitting diesel-powered vehicles to increase particulate emissions for the purpose of ‘coal rolling’".

In theory, the practice is already illegal under federal law and the Clean Air Act. That's because it typically involves removing or modifying mandatory emissions equipment fitted to the vehicles or deliberately altering the fueling to produce greater quantities of pollutants.

However, many of the vehicles to which modifications are made are heavy-duty trucks over 6,000 lbs--such as the Ford F-350--and aren't subject to the same regulations as passenger vehicles.

But the new bill would apply to any diesel vehicle, and allow the Department of Environmental Protection to impose large fines on those violating the law.

Popular perception suggests that drivers are rolling coal to make some kind of anti-environmental statement.

While that might be the case in some instances, Eustace puts it down more to "youthful ignorance".

But it's worth pointing out the vehicle Tim Eustace was driving when that pickup rolled coal in front of him: a Nissan Leaf electric car.

I'm not a tree hugger, that being said, I think each vehicle owner has a responsibility to maintain their rides in such a manner that they don't pollute and run as efficiently as possible.

"Ignorance is bliss", they say. There are many happy people in this world, most of them drive these idiotic trucks.

CNN did an expose on this a couple months ago. I'm glad something is being done about it...even if it is just New Jersey. But I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a death due to a huge cloud of smoke before Congress steps up.

Him and all the other politicians world wide should go to japan and check out firsthand how great the nuclear plants are that are making the electric for their green cars,, then off to afghanastan to see firsthand where the lithium comes from for the batteries.

I don't really care about the pollution aspect in THIS case. Obviously as car enthusiasts and humans we needs to take steps to keep our planet healthy. My beef with rolling coal is how badly it reflects on the car enthusiast community and more importantly the obvious safety risks of someone obscuring your vision with a smoke screen as you drive down the road, then posting it on YouTube as if it's funny. It's morons like these that make us targets for police and tree huggers and make it harder and harder to enjoy our hobby.

I would vote for that..last thing anyone want is to smell diesel smoke while driving. Most of the time I notice it from the school bus..

#1 traffic infringement is tailgating
The higher up the political ladder, the more laws don't pertain to you.
So let's assume this polititian was tailgating, and the kid matted it to get him off his ass.
IF he had been back a car length/10 MPH? He would have had plenty of time to react.
If the kid had enuf fuel going to his engine to lay down enuf smoke at 60 mph to build a vision blocking black cloud? The kid deserves a medal!

Some do it just to do it. But when you modify a diesel to make big power the smoke is a byproduct of it. The reason for the smoke is cuz there is too much diesel in the mix. This comes from bigger than stock injectors usually. When trying to make a lot more power with these trucks injectors are one of the first things that need to be done. So like all the gassers we are just trying to make more power. And to me nothing is cooler than making huge amounts of torque and blowing away mustangs and camaros off the line and usually all the way to 60 in a truck that weighs twice as much

And in the process also end up ruining any chance of passing emissions. Looks cool but doing it for the sake of beating a car? Its your money but what are you going to do when yes when the law is passed?

To all of u tree hugging, electric car driving f*gs. It's called horsepower.
There's more pollution making the batteries for the gay electric cars than made by a little smoke. Get over yourselves.

Black smoke and "rolling coal" is the result of over-fueling caused by improper tuning, too high of fuel pressure, or poor timing.

Most a**holes that drive trucks that "roll coal" simply plug in a programmer, crank the timing and injector pulse width to the max and suddenly they are dumping black soot. It barely increases horsepower, and makes you look like a total ass, especially when you're dusting pedestrian traffic with a cloud of shit because you're trying to look cool.

The last asshat to dump "coal" into my open window at a stop light got hit with a list of charges...

Vehicular assault
Wreckless Endangerment
Operation of an illegally modified vehicle on public streets
Removal of federally mandated emissions equipment

Just to name a few. They impounded and crushed his brand new Dodge 3500.

This fad is not only stupid and inconsiderate, but also potentially dangerous. Not to mention damaging to the vehicle... Some people should not be allowed around tools.

More fuel... more air...add 500 extra rpms... pull 78000 bushels up Wheellock Mt @ 70 mph. Blowing a flame brings back memories of when life on them road was good.
A bit off the subject, but black smoke has its place.

Is this what libs do all day find a few idiots so they can make more laws? These vehicles have to pass state emission inspections correct? Then what is the freakin problem?

Yep. Easy to return the vehicle to stock for a day, then slap on a shitty tune, delete emissions equipment, and go back to dumping black soot on pedestrians and leaving dangerous smoke screens behind them.

They think its cool... Everyone else thinks they're just douche bags. It has nothing to do with performance.

If the aim is more power they should put a blower on it so that they can burn the fuel instead of blowing it out the stack. Of course that adds a lot of dollars and complications to the equasion.

Most diesels if not all are already turbocharged. Adding a blower wont do anything to help. Especially once the heat from the turbo hits the screws. That will just cook them.

The entire issue is that most diesel owners are just cranking up fuel settings. Running injectors at or above a 80% duty cycle. Better turbos, different wastegates and a different fuel map can solve a lot of the smoke issues. But no one wants to pay out for it. One guy in my area specializes in just that. And its made a difference here.
