There's been a lot of buzz around using insect repellent containing DEET to clean hazed headlights. It was started by a video that popped up on Facebook and everyone started asking if it really works. General consensus is that it will only temporarily clean the lights then pit and haze then worse, requiring constant cleaning.
Long story short, I tried something different. Eagle One tire shine, to be exact. Cleaned the crap right off and after one week, no pitting or haze. Not sure what's in it that made it work so well, but it was effortless and I like the results.

the "black magic" tire foam shine works good too. seems like anything that enhances a gloss to it,is worth trying

I have used Meguiar's PlastX on the lenses it cleans them right up but after a month the haze comes back. So you go back over them.

its sad how anyone can let them get to such a terrible stage. if you wipe your windows(to prevent waterspots) and headlights off after every car wash,you can keep this from happening.

I think some are just more prone to haze than others. For example late 90's Dodge minivans. I dare you to find one with clean lights. And that's just one model off the top of my head. But I do agree it's easy enough to prevent.

i only noticed damaqged headlighht lens on one truck i owned a chevy, but the guy i bought it from drove on unpaved roads a lot, so i figured, it was the dust, and sand in the air that damaged the head light lens.

Yeah I agree with you coz I tried it but it does come back after a while about 6 months tho so it's worth it ...I'm not sure all toothpaste does that but I tried the crest one ..trial and error but it don't cost you an arm or a leg lol...

I’ve used Polishing Compound and topped it off with TurtleWax with good results… It last about 6 mos or more… I bought 3M Headlight Lens Restoration but haven’t tried it yet.
The BIG problem with the hazing of the headlight plastic lens is ULTRAVOLET rays from the sun. Simply check cars that have been garage kept for normally a decade to vehicles park outside for a decade. …It’s like the paint on a car that’s been garaged kept versus cars that are park outside for the same time. The paint on a car will look newer that’s been parked in garage most of its life.
I wish they would go back to full GLASS lens… That would fix the hazing of the headlights. I wonder if you can get full glass lens kit?

I tried Meguiers plastic polish on a Dodge mini van with very bad lenses and it did help a bit. I used it on an 03 Buick twice a year and the lenses were still clear a month ago when I got rid of it. To be fair, the mini van lived outside, and the Buick lived in a garage for the five years that I had it. I would not use anything on a lense that was not made for that purpose. There is just no telling what might be in the product that will react with the plastic.

Whatever you do you have to reapply a protectant back over it. I knew a guy who used auto body paint that has uv filtering to it and he shoots headlights with those after he prepares them.

I've been doing paint and bodywork since 06. I've tried the "headlight restore" you can buy from the parts stores but it's a rip off. And spray automotive paint over it is a temporary fix but it will end up peeling off. The best way that I know of is to sand your headlights with no less than 800 grit sandpaper and move up to 1500 n maybe even 2000 grit sandpaper and then using rubbing compound and a buffer and polish them back to New. There is no comparison in the quality and there's nothing added on as a cover-up. It will last for months without dulling.

Yes I agree 800 grit is drastic but on occasion it is necessary. Otherwise you will be sanding your a** off if they are real bad. And I always wax headlights when I'm done too. I run a buffer over the Windows too to remove oxidation and it Will make the water bead off them like rainex

I tried that lens cleaner,from advance auto, it helped some, but not a whole lot. I don't believe the lens can ever restored to original clearness.

The only real way to properly restore headlights is this way. Wax is a must for all headlights that are plastic. But as a Detail Shop owner people don't care for their cars as they should. Then paint peels or headlights haze everyone looks for a Miracle cure in a bottle. It's a vehicle which requires maintenance. Yes that includes washing and waxing your vehicle more then once a year.

those lens are called plastic, but did you ever try to drill a hole in one, I had a gravel knock a pin hole in the top of one, and water was getting in it, so I decided to drill a hole in the bottom of it to let the water drain out, well a regular drill wouldn't touch it, I had to use a hammar drill to drill a hole thru it. tough stuff

You need to sharpen your drill bits. I have drilled numerous holes to drain water from headlights. Some because seal was bad some had chips like yours but never had to use a hammer drill.

Bug repellent eats away at plastic, it'll clean them, but more damage than good.
Toothpaste is abrasive, so it takes away the silicone lining on the lens, spray something with silicone after onto the lenses.
Never tried the tire cleaner, might go give it a shot.

90% of these are just temporary fixes,and the haze will come back after a couple of years. the best bet is to go to a junkyard and pay a cheap price for used ones.
after you install them,spray a clear coat of enamel over them to give it some additional years of protection.

Assuming you can find Clear ones in a junk yard.
I would spray clearcoat on them before installing.
Don't have to worry about overspray getting on car.
Plus unless you use professional grade clearcoat with UV inhibiters your just opening another can of worms.

You need to sharpen your drill bits. I have drilled numerous holes to drain water from headlights. Some because seal was bad some had chips like yours but never had to use a hammer drill.
they were brand new drill bits, right out of the box. try it some time to drill thru one of those new model head lamp covers, they are hard as hell. lol

I tried the "deep woods" mosquito repellent on my dad's old car almost 4 months ago.
holy crap,it definitely works....still holding up too.
spray a good amount on a rag,rub into each headlight about 20 times,or until you see them clearing up

It didn't destroy the lens cover, just put a hole in it the size of the drill bit, it didn't shatter it or anything like that.

Dealt with these issues.
The only problem with drain holes
Is they allow more moisture into the light
Ventilating them helps the immediate issue
But if your keeping the vehicle,
Replace them

Cup, soap and water does not fix a faded and glazed over headlamp assembly. Amazon dot com does. All one has to do is order a set up.
I did just that last year with my car. I got 8 years out of the original assemblies. I won't have the car another 8 years. Soon it will be the next owners issue to deal with.
