We all know that people in their 50's and above have a difficult time losing weight.

I need to lose 20 lbs by Christmas.

I go to the gym 3x per week.

one hour of cardio and one hour of lifting weights.

I don't eat a lot, but maybe i'm eating the wrong food.

Any advice for my weight lost. I like going to the gym.

Let me know what i can do in the gym to reach me goal.

Build muscle: it uses fat more, throughout the day.

Do a combo of cardio and high intensity exercise.

If you have a smart phone, I've found the 'my fitness pal' app to be most helpful. It is a very accurate calorie AND nutrient counter. You can also log your workouts. Log a week's worth of meals and activities and let us know your findings. That will help us help you find areas to improve.

If you do your cardio before weights, reverse it. Do weights first, then cardio. You want that stored muscle sugar to help with the weights.

Also, if you don't have them in your program(and are able to do them), high-rep(i.e. 20 rep sets) weighted squats seem to bump up the metabolism.

I tried that, but i find that if i do WEIGHT without doing cardio first, i strain my muscles. I need that warm up..hence the cardio first.

I usually do ten rep of ten set (increase weights on each rep. of ten)

I'll try your suggestion. Thanks.

When is the last time you tried doing weights before cardio? When you were more out of shape and in less habit of going to the gym perhaps?

A good ten minute run/jog/walk should be sufficient for a warm up. Then go do your weights. Then come back to cardio.

HOWEVER: I would rather see someone alternate lifting days and cardio days - 6 days working out a week. Helps your metabolism each day. And helps form good habits too.

I also encourage you to alter your cardio - bicycle, yoga, running, elliptical.

If you run - do some intervals alternating speeds or inclines.

Same with walking. The more incline you add the more muscles you engage.

Tell us more about what a normal workout is for you. How much weight. What lifts. How many reps.

Cardio - what cardio routines do you do?

If you are doing an hour of cardio and an hour of lifting weights - and you aren't totally DEAD the next day, you're wasting your time. You should be pretty taxed by 30-45 minutes of just weightlifting alone. Or that amount of time cardio.

Time spent workout out does not equate to weight loss. Productively working out does.

Awaiting more information, but I have a strong hunch I know where some of your problems may lie

Here is my workout routine.

1) elliptical machine 20 incline and gradual 7 - 8- 9 incline (for 45 minutes)

2) treadmill incline 7 speed 3 (i don't like running) for 15 minutes.

3) Weights: chest, legs, arms, back, stomach.... stretches for one hour.

My diet is so, so.....I eat fruits, little vegetables, meat, water, dark chocolate.

I think you are right.....my muscles hurt for only one day and i'm good to go the other day.

how heavy of weights are you using

your "cardio" really isn't CARDIO - the elliptical MIGHT be, but you're wasting time doing mediocre workouts.

unfortunately, cardio IS getting your heart rate up, and maintaining that.

basic walking isn't MUCH ... and a speed of three miles an hour isn't that daunting, even with an incline.

you would be better off doing 30 minutes of jogging with a few minutes of sprint intervals.

or taking a spinning class.

but i REALLY want to know how heavy of weights your using, and how many reps and sets you do for each lift

Except for advanced lifters, 1 initial weights-exercise warm-up set or 2 for each bodypart should be enough warm-up. If by strain you mean soreness the next day, that's normal when you get stronger over time. It just means you did something your muscles weren't used to, i.e. heavier weight.

As far as your 10 reps for 10 sets per exercise, that's fine occasionally but not as a regular set volume per exercise because the initial several sets are gonna be too easy. Standard is 3-4 sets per exercise.

Like dixie said, post your routine in detail with the exact exercises you do on what days for how many sets and for how many reps per set. Nice run-on huh.

i have a hard time believing you curl 100 pounds and dead lift 100 pounds and leg press only 100 pounds. that seems very excessive for some lifts and not enough weight for other lifts.

are you doing ten sets of five reps? or ten reps in five sets?

something isn't adding up with your weightlifting routine ...

i also find it difficult to understand how if you are doing a FULL HOUR of 75% max lifts, how you can ALSO do an hour of cardio after, and not completely be dead.

what you ought to do is alternate upper body day and lower body day ... i do my "cardio" on upper body days, because it helps loosen up my legs and glutes the day following a lower body lifting session.

it's not really ever suggested to lift both upper and lower body together. you would do better to work out six days a week as i already suggested, lower body three days a week, upper body the other three days a week, alternating.

@ dixie_dancer I maybe using the wrong terminology.

When i go to the gym tomorrow i'll have one of the trainers explain the terminology to me.

Yes, i believe that i should work out six days a week.

I usually try to work my entire boy so if i get lazy and don't go to the gym i don't worry so much. lol.

Thanks for your help and i will keep you posted..I'll try to get a schedule so i can post it.

basically, the way you're doing it, you're not getting in an EFFICIENT workout, like i said, it means little that you spend two hours at the gym, if you're not doing what needs done to be an effective workout in that time frame.

it's like this:

saying you're going to eat a little bit of breakfast food, a little bit of lunch food, and a little bit of dinner and dessert all in one meal, in case you miss your meals the next day, it just doesn't add up.

you're not getting 100% of breakfast, 100% of lunch, 100% of dinner and dessert, you're only getting 1/3 of each. doesn't make much sense.

are you using free weights or weight machines? also, you have a trainer, yet you're asking DH how to lose 20 pounds? doesn't sound like he's a very good trainer if you can't ask him this, or if he isn't helping you lose the weight

Hour-long cardio before weights is holding you back. It doesn't take an hour of cardio to warm-up for weights. In fact, it doesn't take any cardio to warm-up for weights. A light weight 1st set for each weights-exercise is enough warm-up for beginners. Do the cardio after weights.

Here's one routine if you workout 3 days a week:

Workout A: Upperbody
Lat pulldown(back)
Chest press
Back row
Overhead press(shoulders)
Biceps curls
Triceps press or extension

Workout B: Lowerbody/Core
Leg press or squat
Hamstring curls
Calf raise machine
Back extension machine(core)
Abs(core)

Alternate workouts. For example: A on Mon., B on Wed., A on Fri., B on Mon., A on Wed., B on Fri. and so on. Standard is 3-4 sets per exercise, no need for 5 sets for you. You can do a half hr. of cardio after each workout.

This is one routine. Others might have others.

@ niceguy22368 Thanks for the information.

Yeah men lose weight easier than women.

I do what i can at the gym. I'm taking the other posters advice to work the upper body one day and the lower body the next. I must say that they are right. I was not using some of my muscles when i do the same routine.

My diet, i think is good. I don't eat process food, nothing from can. Fresh fruits and vegetables, water, and protein (chicken) nuts.

I'll keep on this track and see what happens by Christmas.

If you like to add any other suggestions it will be appreciated.

have you logged your daily food intakes into a calorie/nutrient counting log? such as myfitnesspal as i suggested? i'm curious your caloric intake each day, as well as how your fat/carb/protein chart looks. Diet honestly is THE LARGEST portion of weight loss. I'm guessing something is amiss with yours.

I do agree with the gentlemen who gave you the lifting ideas - the sets you currently did, are not near enough all-inclusive. you're doing ultimately ONE arm lift - but there are multiple muscles within your arms that are not getting worked. the same with your core, and your legs. this is why it's imperative you alternate days targeting alternating muscle groups, you SHOULD feel SOMETHING after each workout, or else you're not doing your muscles and body any good.

i'm also a big proponent of free weights over the machine. especially as people age, balance is a key component to one's fitness that they can lose. Using free weights also utilizes other muscle groups while doing one movement, that otherwise is not utilized.

For example, if you stand and do bicep curls, your balance is targeted, your core is more engaged, your back is engaged, your glutes and legs can also be engaged. while your goal isn't to TARGET those muscles, you're still engaging other muscles - this is the whole getting the MOST out of each workout concept i've been talking about this whole time. the same with doing a free weight squat or lunge, or a free weight bench press, etc.

Haha. On the last set of each exercise, push yourself to do more repetitions than you did on the last set of that exercise peviously. A notepad helps to keep track.

Every 2 weeks, go up 5-10 lbs. on your exercise poundages. Getting stronger helps with weight loss.

Take walks for cardio. Give up starches and sugars. Drink water throughout the day. It increases metabolism so when you eat you're hungrier faster. Take walks. 5 days a week. Start at 15 mins or one mile. Work up to 3 miles gradually by the 3rd month. No bread. Instead of candy bars or cereal eat a bowl of fruit or have a banana. Yes its carbs but less calories and tend to burn quicker. I walk 5 days a week average 4 miles a day and some days walk 6. Lost 20 lbs in 2 months. Added weights and squats and lost 10 more last month. Feeling pretty good. If I can do it you can too.

Saying your diet is the problem and asking for tips is like just saying I'm sick, give me a cure. Specifics are needed. Provide a week or 2 worth of meals and portions.

How much weight have you lost the last 2 weeks?

Have you increased your exercise poundages?

OK, starting today i'll record my diet.

So far i have not lost any weight, but gain.

I think i gained muscle mass. i can feel them.

Yes, i change the way i exercise, i find that INTERVALS is effective and i don't have to stay on a machine for one hour.

Thanks, i appreciate your opinion.

the more muscle mass you have, the more your body burns at rest. which is a good thing!

do record your diet. it may be surprising to see what nutrients you are lacking in your diet, if nothing else!

It's normal to not lose any weight or gain a little at the beginning from gaining tone or gaining muscle. It's like preparation for future weight loss. It'll stop and go in reverse so that you'll start losing weight soon.

By poundages I meant weights. It's important that you try to do more reps on the last set of each weights exercise than you did previously for that same exercise. It's also important that you increase 5-10 lbs on the weights exercises every 2 weeks so that it raises your metabolism.

Do a combo of cardio and high intensity exercise.

Ah.. another "high intensity" recommendation. It seems to be everywhere these days. It's great in theory. But there is never a warning attached of "work up to it by getting properly conditioned first". So people jump into it full bore and either get injured or burned out and give up.

Before I have a client do anything high intensity (hill sprints, Prowler sled, battle ropes, burpees, circuit training, etc) I'll have them stick with basic full body strength training (squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, etc) and endurance work. Example - Set a treadmill incline @ the max of 15%. Then set the speed for 3.0mph and walk WITHOUT HOLDING ON. Most people at first have a problem maintaining for 1-2 mins.

Hello

I was noticing you have determined your diet may be the culprit in slowing your progress.

I would say to google BMI calculator and determine your BMI, which will guide you to a proper calorie intake.

You can calculate your ammount to work off, and calories to reduce for your net daily calorie defect. Or how many calories your body will get from fat, potentially.....

You don't mention a heart rate monitor. A heart rate monitor tells you if you are in the cardio range where you burn more glycogen and less fat, or lower intensity where you burn a higher percentage of fat and less sugar.

It gets down to math and working the fat burning zone for a longer time. This is all on Google.

I shoot for 1.5 lbs a week. A pound of fat has a fairly wide calorie burn off so it is a less exact thing. It can be 2800 to 3700 calories depending on water density but don't get hung up on that. Lots of fitness people argue about it. An average is 3500.

So if you cut 500 calories off your BMI guide for maintaining, and do 500+ of exercise. You can potentially drop a pound a week if you work 4 days a week.
