I just got Road Runner here and some of my functions don't work now. My Malware won't work and the back up and restore won't work. What do I do?

I guess no answer is an answer. I was hoping to get a solution to my problem here.

Sunday is a slow day here. Come Monday morning, this will be filled with answers.

Before attempting to do a restore, it might be wise to determine if what you are looking at is worthy of such a task. For the most part, a system restore is not that idfficult with Windows 7 and up. The system makes a "check point" or a "snapshot" before a major event or a specific amount of time.

When did your Malware program work last? What did you have before RoadRunner? Did you offer the installer anything to drink and did they take the offer (or decline it) respectfully or did they act like you were trying to poison them?

What version of Windows are you running? Is it Windows 7?

If you want to do a online virus scan, a company I trust is ESET. It is free and you can get to it by going to this website:
http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Look for the blue rectangular box / button that has white lettering that says "Run ESET Online Scanner" and press it once.

A smaller window should open up in a few moments. It should say "Access Free Online Scanner" towards the top of the page.

Look for the sexy words "ESET Smart Installer" and click it. This will start downloading the program. You maybe asked if you want to save or run, I'd choose run. It is pretty easy and not sleazy or shady.

Run the program after it downloads.

You will have to agree to their licensing / liability agreement. They aren't going to put anything subversive on your system. They are pretty ok people. This is a one time scan.

It will then start downloading the defintions and the rest of whta it needs to run the scan. One that is done,

What I would recommend is have it to a scan first without it trying to get rid of anything. I know it is going to take some extra time but perhaps you can start this and then go for a walk and bring your dog or a neighbors dog or their kid that is stuck inside too much where bad shit brews.

Look for the second line that says "Disable Detection of potentially unwanted applications." and put a check mark in front

Then click the ADVANCED button

Uncheck the first one that says "Remove Found Threats"

Put a check mark in front of "Scan for potentially unwanted applications"

CLick the START scan button

Once things start, I'd get away from that computer. If it has a virus than get some alcohol , bleach and wipes ready for that nasty thing. Make sure you are wearing worthy.

That last line was supposed to be funny.

Report back what you find. We can make a more educated decision from there knowing what's up.

Enjoy your day!

My security wouldn't allow it to download. What is a "Domain Administrator"?

Domain Administrator is someone who is usually assigned to keep everyone in check in the dungeon when the master is gone or preoccupied. Traditionally, the domain administrator someone who is driven by trepidation and the lack of complete knowledge dismantles their confidence. In order to bring it back up, lashing out and spontaneous irrational behavior may occur. This is probably why your file will not download.

If you can distract the domain administrator (we will call him or her the D.a. [note the lower case "a"]) for a minute, we will be able to get through this. The D.a. can not stand fresh air, so if this message reaches you during the safety of the daylight hour and there are not any natural disasters taking place outside your threshold, enable fresh air to penetrate and please return to your keyboard.

That is good.

Next look at the keyboard, look towards the lower left hand corner of the keyboard. Locate the "Ctrl" key and the "Alt" key. Is there a key in between those two? If so, that is most likely the "Windows" key with its gay flag. Nothing antisemitic or anti homo here, it is just acknowledging this for Microsoft getting out of the closet.

Please press that "Windows" key once and release. A magic box will appear that will ask you if want to "search programs and files"

Please type this in iexplore.exe

After a minute or few, you will see a light blue "E" at the top that says "iexplore" next to it. Move that silly pointer up there and press the right mouse button. Choose "Run as administrator"

The screen may go dark for one second, bells go off and possibly the D.a. will get alarmed but show no fear and choose "YES" for the next option. You are the new D.a. and you will do fine.

Please follow the previous email and see if you can get that virus scan to go.

Thank you!

Also, don't leave that fresh air open too long in case you might be inviting criminal behavior.

Love yourself!

Well, good news this morning. I got the Malwarebytes to work. I had to go to the safe mode to do it. Still trying to get some other functions to work. It's all an educational situation and I've got a lot to learn now that I'm retired. I've been so busy working to do a lot of these things.

Bad news. My computer has a virus or more than one and it's taken a toll on her. I had to get another one today. My sister had one to sell me and I'm still trying to figure out how it works. Her set up is different from mine.

I remember RR. East coast? This was a long time ago. The installation disc would contain all kinds of opt in things that would say "recommended", then change your browser settings and add all kinds of useless crap. I stopped using windows a long time ago. So can't help much but always uncheck what they say is useful. It usually is not. Don't accept free trials, nothing is free on windows these days. Just my opinion. Best of luck. ~P
