Martial Arts in my opinion is an extension of the mind. Boxing is an extension of physical fortitude you have withib yourself. The answer to all of your questions isprevalent on whether you have that mental and physical toughness inside of you to begin with. Meaning you can do it if you put your mind to it, be consistent in your kick boxing training, and show dedication into honing your craft. Truthfully, it isn't easy but if you have tbe aforementioned in place, you can master any kind of martial art in place. It's just dependent on you to make that a reality......gamer

I was still kickboxing and doing Toughman contests at your age.
A good trainer will not let you fight if you're not ready. So if you trust the trainer, it is worth a shot.

I'm biased a bit because of my background so be aware of this.
Most of the people responding to you, including me, have never been in an amateur boxing match of any kind.
By this I mean Golden Gloves, AAU boxing or even White Collar boxing.
They have never been in that ring being punched hard by a trained amateur boxer; an even tinier percentage have ever been up against a professional fighter at any time.
A larger percentage of the responders will have had a few street fights in their lives wth a few, such as me, having more than a few.
I grew up in housing projects and, as I said, had more than a few fist fights.
Being punched hard in the face by someone, even if untrained, isn't a pleasant experience.
I won more than I lost but it's not something I would reccomend as a regular event.
When you're punched, or kicked for that matter, in the head you run the risk of concussion along with the loss of brain cells.
So if you want to train for self defense keep that in mind.
If you're just looking to burn calories then boxing style cardio is fine plus you might learn to throw punches properly.
If you're seeking self defense then anything you do that doesn't involve regular sparring will be a waste of time.
I say this because regular sparring helps you to manage the fear of fighting, the adrenaline dump you'll experience and creates muscle memory so that you do things automatically.
Joe Rogan, on Youtube, speaks about "martial arts" that don't spar versus those that do.
Those "combat sports" would include boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and others.
The common theme is that the trainees regularly spar; they test the techniques to see if they truly work.
They don't punch or kick the air and pretend they're learning to fight.
The problem with true boxing training is that the sparring involves being hit all over your body particularly the head.
I train in Jiu-Jitsu (Relson Gracie school) and am convinced that those who are higher ranked than I am can easily handle themselves in a self defense situation without a lot of problems.
What I'm saying also applies to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in general; the techniques are identical but the training is a bit different from each other (in my experience).
A novice can learn the art without losing brain cells.
That novice (white belt) will learn enough techniques to be able to defend himself/herself in a street situation against an untrained assailant.
Don't get me wrong; a person who is an untrained street fighter, but has had a lot of street fights, is dangerous to other untrained people.
But, against folks who have been grappling for a while, I suspect the untrained street fighter will be unconcious pretty quickly unless he has sucker punched the grappler without warning.
I recommend going the Jiu-Jitsu route.
That's my two cents worth.
