1986: John McNamara was only 3 outs away from winning a World Series for the Boston Red Sox, but he did not his best defensive team on the field.
2011: Ron Washington was only 3 outs away from winning a World Series for the Texas Rangers, but he did not have his best defensive team on the field.
I rarely second-guess a manager, but you have to have your best defensive team on the field when you have a lead in the 9th or, yes, extra innings.

Many people do not remember that if Buckner fields that "little roller behind the bag" and steps on first to record the third out that the game was tied at that point.
Also the Mets win that resulted from Buckners error only tied the series.
Bosox still had game seven.
In which they actually took a lead until Hernandez got the big hit and Strawberry smacked that three run shot to ice it.

Makes sense to me, opie, but Washington was cursed by his associations with the 82 Twinkies where he was a utility infielder.
