You use whatever you find they will bite on Sometimes it's a red & white spiner other times it's something else like a live worm

Triple Tail or Triple Ripple another brand of jig and jig tail is my favorite! They both work well on salt water speckled trout and are my favorite bait for rainbows up in Alaska.
Tip them with a live minnow for the specks "crappie" and a small piece of salted shrimp for the other two.

In this area nothing seems to work better and more consistently than an emerald shiner on a hook, single hook or a spreader ( double hook rig ), slip float or fixed depending on water depth.

Had to google that one turns out your emerald shiner is the same Missouri minnow I use behind the triple tail jigs here in Florida.....never knew they were in the shiner family. Fresh water grass shrimp are also killers for specks here in Florida, and are free for the dipping in most grass beds.

I have heard of grass shrimp before, but have never seen one here in northeast Ohio, our winters maybe too much for them.
I had to look up Missouri minnow, the coloration is different than what we see in the Emerald shiners in Lake Erie. We have a number of different types of shiners here, the ones from Lake Erie seem to be the best bait, even on our inland lakes.
They don't handle warm water well, lower oxygen content? Most bait stores around inland lakes here sell fathead minnows or golden shiners for bass fishing, they are a lot hardier.

I agree here in NW Florida I like live bait minnows, grass shrimp, small shiner's, small shad, and craw dad's. In the month of February on or around the full moon they are on the bed and they will bite on a white feather jig. Its like a shooting fish in a barrel.

Usually lettuce works fine. If compacted booked cabbage will loosen up the casting arm.
