My bestfriend is pregnant , she wants a home birth but her ob told her it isn't possible with a female her size (303lbs) . I told her to find a midwife that will assist her with her home birth .

It seems like doctors automatically classify overweight women as high risk even without any health issues . Do you think this is fair for us ? I want a home birth too and would be sick of the unnecessary test not to mention an unnecessary c-section .

What was the reasoning behind this. What I found is a tendency towards higher risk for birth defects so was wondering if that was the issue.

No , she was considered high risk because of her weight , they tell her she has to go for GD testing ever two weeks .

She should consider having it at the hospital, at least they are more equipped in case something goes wrong, she needs to listen to her ob she's not telling her anything wrong, I bet she has health problems also being that size

No , she's healthy . Just because she's fat doesn't mean she's unhealthy , her doctor gave her a clean bill of health besides her weight . Her weight is the only reason why her ob wants her to do a c-section . It's very unnecessary , I told her to go get a second opinion and look for a certified midwife .

Op, the dr is right. Do your research before posting.

The reality is being overweight does cause health problems even if you are not pregnant.

If you are pregnant you can have complications such as high blood pressure, blood clotting, diabetes, etc.

The baby can be born prematurely and have a whole lot of other problems to go with it.

It seems like your friend should have gotten her weight down before she got pregnant.
Gotten in shape etc.

I did with each of the babies I carried. I owe it to myself and to baby to do everything I can to ensure that we are both healthy.

I did do my research , thorough research and I found other obs who said being overweight shouldn't restrict you from a home birth and doesn't require a c-section . I also found other plus size women who have had home births at her size . Midwives have also reported assisting in home births with large women so again , size should not automatically push us into a label as high risk .

Her heart I am sure is racing five times over the normal...and it would surprise me if she doesn't have diabetes 2...and exacerbated by the pregnancy

I wouldn't worry if your and your friend (if really U R talking about a friend) way of thinking would only affect either one of you but, dear OP, it affects the baby...and that, dear, is as selfish as it comes....Needless to say it's also very ignorant.

Again , her doctor said his only concern was her weight , she doesn't have high blood pressure nor diabetes . It's unnecessary treatment .

If the baby is at risk for home delivery birth should be the question. Most sane midwives with a malpractice insurance and diploma would not even take on the case. The obesity alone puts the child at risk to be stillborn many other problems that can occur such as hypoxia and MS. If the mother has health issues that cause a BMI greater than 50 the health issues are exacerbated in childbirth and she too will require medical attention.

I guess the best advice is your friend should see a different OB Dr.

Being your the friend typing this, are you 100% sure your friend gave all the facts.Just maybe you should go with her to next Ob visit. To hear both sides.Or chose different Dr.

A moment so difficult, painful and risky as is the delivery of a baby...and an extremely overweight woman wants to make it 100 times worse by having the kid at home.
Ignorance has no limits.

Your friends only concern should be her baby. She needs to make sure things go smoothly. She needs more then a second opinion, she needs to weigh her options that are infront of her.

Not really; her main concern should be her health; a sick mother -and she is one- can't care for her baby as she should.
I wonder how being 300+ lbs. she even got pregnant.

Maybe she got pregnant by being a female that ovulated ?

The one who should eat -three times over- the crazy sign is you...dear...since an extremely overweight female rarely can get pregnant. ...even if she ovulates her brains off.
Please, get an education before answering to people who know a lot more than you do. Thank you.

If you knew more about than I did you would know there are many plus size mothers , especially in America . Maybe you should go get some new , updated information since yours is clearly stuck in the 60's . You would also know that plus size mothers can be completely healthy but thank you for your nonsensical input .

Sure, there are many plus size mothers...but 300+ lbs is not plus size but morbidly obese...and the risks of delivering a kid with more than one disease is very high for these ladies.
Yes, I know more than you but it is obvious that you refuse to investigate the case...so, my dear, this is my lost post to you...in this subject or any other. Ignorance gets me tired.
